Good call groundnpound although to be fair to the Dutch there was an article in one of the national newspapers describing Euro qualifiers and strange results in which Spain had to win by 11 clear goals to progress to the tournament instead of the Dutch. The Result - Spain 12 Malta 1 --- Hmmm.
And then there was the case of the Argentines who needed to win by 5 or 6 clear goals, I can't be arsed to google it, in their final group match to make the final in Argentina, that's right in Argentina during the 1978 World Cup that was held in Argentina and by some luck or judgement managed to achieve that result ---- Hmmm.
As a fifteen year old kid watching the pictures it was a horrible introduction to world of professional sport. Peru may as well have kicked the goals in their own net. Shameful.
I so wanted the Dutch to win that final despite having a great liking for Kempes and Luque, in a proper manly way, and still have an affection for the Dutch although in later years this may have more to do with their statuesque, big titted, female fans that the TV companies seem so interested in.

conspiracy theory's in sport! NEVER! next you will be saying bobby riggs threw his match against billie jean king cos he had a huge bet on her to win
Yeah some dodgy dealings there Captain V... My dad used to say when i was a lad that Seaman let one through his legs at Euro 96 against Holland to put Scotland out.He was certain of it! I remember Kluivert puting it away actually.Think if England had kept the game at 4-0 Scotland would've gone through lol We'll never know mate!
Here it is.It's the last goal at 1:45.Not the best vid.
The Dutch probs did just give San Marino a proper goin over the other night, nothin suspect! You'd think though, nowadays, especially at international level a manager would be able to set up his side not to ship silly amounts of goals like that.Maybe 5 or 6 at worst!
Talking about dodgy dealings... that ref at the Scotland game had a bloody horror show, missed 2 clear penalties (1 for each side) in the first half, then gave them a penalty in the last minute for a blatant dive. Then, about 30 seconds later, Berra was taken down - and booked for diving! You couldn't make it up

They must just be a hopeless side.
The Dutch are the number one ranked team in the world according to FIFA so they should be hammering the likes of San Marino.
Mind those same FIFA rankings have England at number four.
Don't get me wrong I wish England were drubbing every other team on the planet but even I know we are not the fourth best team in the world.
Tiki, tiki, tiki, they are still the best team in the world, taka, taka, taka.

If we're talking about great stitch-ups, we have to mention West Germany v Austria in 1982, when they got a result which meant both teams qualified for the next round. It involved the Germans getting an early lead and then neither team trying for the rest of the match. It was this match which led to the rule that all final group matches must be played simultaneously.
As for Holland-San Marino, there's nothing fishy about that one. It's just what happens when a very good team comes up against a very bad team. There is no benefit to having the likes of San Marino, Liechtenstein and Malta playing the big boys in every qualifying tournament. They should at least earn the right to play them by having a pre-qualifying stage, as happens in Africa and Asia.
It was their biggest ever defeat by 1 goal. Since their first official game in a Euro 92 qualifier on 14 November 1990 which they lost at home to Switzerland
0-4 they've lost all but two of their games 1-1 v Latvia 2002 FIFA World Cup qualifier & in 2003 they drew 2-2 in a friendly with Liechtenstein, this was the only time they've scored more than 1 goal in a game.
In 94 games they've lost 92 & drawn 2, scored 16 & conceded 418, average per game 4.45
