Not seen him play mate...?
Exclusive – Brendan Rodgers: Simon Mignolet will be a rival for Reina not his replacement

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has told talkSPORT that Simon Mignolet is being bought by the club as competition for Pepe Reina.

The Reds are set to sign the Belgian from Sunderland in a deal reportedly worth around £9million, while Reina is rumoured to be leaving Anfield with Barcelona a possible destination.

But the Northern Irish boss has revealed that, when he completes his transfer to Merseyside, the Black Cats goalkeeper will rival the Spaniard for the number one shirt at the club next season, not replace him.

Rodgers told talkSPORT:

“One of the things we’re trying to build is a competitive squad.

“Our squad was very thin last year and it was great being we were able to introduce a few young players from our academy that but it’s very important that we have competition in every position and that wasn’t always the case.

“Pepe Reina and I went out for a meal a couple of months before the end of the season and I told him exactly what we were going to do, which was to provide real competition in that area.

“He was fully aware of my intention of the course of the last few months. It certainly wouldn’t be a surprise to Pepe.

“Pepe is a fantastic goalkeeper but Simon Mignolet is a player that has done really well.

“He’s also part of an emerging Belgium squad that has come into a golden era. He’s very much a part of that.

“When you work with Pepe he’s a great man. A very committed man to the club and he’s an outstanding goalkeeper."

I think we are going to sell Reina next season when Valdes leaves Barca, that is why we have buy Mingnolet because I do not think he would have signed for a club knowing he will be number 2 for a long time. I think maybe he has been told this or something.
Latest on Mikhitaryan

All of a sudden Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s move to Liverpool looks to be on shaky ground.Related Link: How to pronounce Henrikh Mkhitaryan [A guide for Liverpool fans]
Rumours have been flying for weeks now claiming that Shakhtar Donetsk’s attacking midfielder is close to signing on at Anfield.
The deal looked so close to being iron-clad after Russian news agency Itar-Tass reported that Mkhitaryan was on his way to Liverpool for a medical via flights from Moscow and London last weekend. But all of a sudden the deal seems further away than ever.
On Saturday night Mkhitaryan turned to his official Facebook page to address all the transfer speculation, and in a long post the Armenian star started to make Liverpool fans worry whether the move will ever materialise.
Mkhitaryan began by calling for everyone to stop spreading rumours about his current situation, noting that all kinds of rubbish have been promulgated in the media through unreliable sources.
Noting that he is currently holidaying in Paris, Mkhitaryan made it clear that his contract issues will be handled thoroughly by his agent and current employers Shakhtar, whilst stressing that he will remain loyal to the Ukrainians until any new deal has been signed.
Then came the attack on the press.
Mkhitaryan blamed the Russian and British media for lying about any upcoming medical at Liverpool, saying that the rumours were sparked after he was spotted at Vienna airport.
The Liverpool target finished off by saying that he will not speak to any media outlet regarding his employment situation, while he thanked his fans for their continued support.

Liverpool complete Iago Aspas deal

ESPN staff
June 23, 2013

Liverpool have completed the signing of former Celta Vigo forward Iago Aspas, subject to international clearance.
The Merseyside club announced on Sunday that the 25-year-old has completed his protracted move to Anfield, signing a "long-term" contract after successfully passing a medical at the Reds' Melwood training facility.
The cost of the deal was not disclosed, but is believed to be in the region of £7.6 million for a player who scored 12 goals and provided seven assists in 34 appearances for Celta last season.
"I know as much as I have seen on TV and I think he is a great player and could be a great addition," goalkeeper Pepe Reina previously said of Aspas. "I've been asking around and everyone talks well about him so hopefully he will be an asset for us and will be very helpful for the team."
Aspas is Liverpool's third signing of the summer, following the agreement to sign Kolo Toure from Manchester City on a free transfer and the addition of Luis Alberto from Sevilla.
