Submarine double-header…
HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER
The first and best of the Jack Ryan movies, IMO. Alec Baldwin and Sean Connery are both excellent. A lot of the Jack Ryan movies get bogged down in the political / technological exposition of their source material (…Tom Clancy can spend five pages describing a paperclip if it’s a PENTAGON paperclip…). But this one skips along at brisk pace. I’ve seen it 3 or 4 times before, but it still keeps me interested.
CRIMSON TIDE
Basically, a vehicle for Denzel Washington and Gene Hackman to out-act each other, and it’s impossible to tell who wins … they are both awesome. Unlike the HFRO, the plot here is a little ludicrous, but it’s bulkhead-to-bulkhead action, so it’s quite a fun ride. Jerry Bruckheimer produced it, so just imagine Top Gun underwater, but without the indignity of a Tom Cruise love scene set to a Berlin ballad.
