Fright Night 2
5/10 Uninspired, formulaic vampire movie that offers nothing new. Some ok sfx but needed a bigger budget, better actors and a stronger script. On a plus side it had one or two good looking girls in it
.
Journey 2: The Mysterious Island 6.9/10.
Thor: The Dark World (came out today) fantastic sequel to the 1st thor film where thor has to defend earth and asgard from malkeith and the dark elves. looks amazing, the special effects and sound effects are fantastic along with fantastic action sequences, especially the final battle. Chris Hemsworth is again very good as thor, tom hiddleston is brilliant as loki and Christopher eccleston is good as the main villain Malkeith. Also Stan Lee has a very funny cameo.
finally don't go when the credits start as there are TWO extra scenes. one partway through the credits and one right at the end
8/10
"Ender's Game" (12A)
Described in the trailers as "Harry Potter meets Star Wars". That tagline actually put me off it, but was dragged along by others anyway.
And it turns out to be seriously misleading.
It's actually more like a junior version of "Starship Troopers" - kids recruited by a fascistic Earth Space Defence Command (represented by Harrison Ford finally acting his age as a desk bound general) to be trained in combat to fight alien insects, on the pretext that kids are better at playing computer games. So more like Harry Potter enlisted in a nerdy boot camp in space.
Overall it was OK I guess, but unremittingly dour and serious. Unless your child is a serious alienated miserabilist emo teenager; I would guess they are probably not going to enjoy it.
And the "twist" ending I thought was a bit obvious - I won't spoil it though.
The 'Lads Shit Film Night In' was this week entertained by Ozombie (aka Osombie)
A zombie film about the return of Osama Bin Laden and the special forces team sent in to find out what's going on. Its SyFy/Horror channel fare and best watched with beer and your mates. Actually enjoyed this more than Sharknado

Enders Game was written quite a few years ago and is the first in a series of books aimed at older teens. I might watch it when it comes out on dvd but as with all teen targeted movies, you never get originality.
Escape From Alcatraz (1979)
Slow burning, tense prison drama with Clint Eastwood in the lead role. Based on a true escape attempt. It was the final collaboration between Eastwood and director Don Siegel (the man who gave us Dirty Harry and Two Mules For Sister Sara). Never watched it all the way through before but glad I did. 3/5

Yeah, the person I saw it with was a big fan of the books, and said it was reasonably faithful : so if you are a fan of the books seems like it was quite respectful of them; but I think the marketing tagline smells of desperation. As I say, it was OK, but not really a "feel good" or all out action movie - too serious/downbeat.
Iron Man, out of all the three films this was my fav Robert Downey Jnr was born to play this role 9.8/10.
