Imagine a cross between Air Force One (1997) and Die Hard (1988) and I reckon you'd come pretty close to this exciting hostage thriller directed by Training Day (2001) director Antoine Fuqua. Gerard Butler is in his element as the one man army Secret Service man, with Rick Yune and Aaron Eckhart backing him up with good performances as the villain and the president respectively. There's a lot of corny American bravado, over-use of the F word and some of the violence is very hard to watch. But as an action thriller it hits the buttons. Awesome soundtrack too with the main theme tune leaving an impression. 3/5
Shooter 9/10. One of my favourite movies. Mark Wahlberg at his coolest, playing a former marine sniper tackling a corrupt senator and his covert team of operatives. Not as cheesy as I've just made it sound!
Jack Reacher 8/10. A decent and quite hard hitting thriller. Tom Cruise, Robert Duvall and Rosamund Pike give decent performances. Not 100% sure of why half of what was going on, was going on...but enjoyable none the less
it starts new years eve 1999 with tony stark at a conference in berne (which was mentioned in iron man) and then jumps forward to present day after the events of avengers assemble which have taken their toll on tony stark and has to try and stop the mandarin and his terrorist organisation
Robert downey jnr is again brilliant as tony stark with some great one liners, Gwyneth Paltrow is good as pepper potts and finally gets to see some action. Ben Kingsley and Guy Pearce are very good as the two villians, the mandarin and aldritch killian (both of whom are in the iron man comic books)
very good special effects with several fantastic action set pieces including the destruction of tony stark's house, a mid air rescue from air force one and a battle featuring lots of iron man suits
as always there is a nice extra bit after the credits. wasn't what I expected it to be but still good
The remake of the original landmark horror film has some great gory moments, some nice shocks, and pays homage to the original with some good standout scenes, it doesn't have that claustrophobic dark feel of the original, but it's well worth a watch nonetheless. 7/10
