Must have thought it was a US Airliner and didn't realise it wasn't until it was too late. Don't know how this affects Ukraine - Iran relationship, but I id have suspicions it would turn out the Iranians were likely to have made such a mistake

I doubt it. It's more likely a mistake the missile was fired at all, than a wrong target type mistake.
Iran has said It will continue missile attacks until US forces are out of Middle East while the US has said it is ready to take part in "serious negotiations" with Iran as it insisted the killing of their top general was an act of self-defence.

Starting to look like the Iranians shot it down themselves by mistake, by the latest reports.
or it had a problem strayed from the flight path Iranian air defence thought it was a retaliation bombing and took it out
We will prob never know the full story
We probably never will
So it's likely that Iranians may have realised they made a terrible catastrophic error
At some point it may get added to this list :-

Wasn't it the Korean incident by the Soviets that caused outrage?
was Malaysian Airways ML17 that was shot down over ukraine by either ukranian rebels backed by russia or by russian military
if trump had any sense would let the others take the lead especially canada because they had souls on board. and maybe see if they will let the french look at the boxes
