^ from a quick google search there were 123 democracies in 2013 so I don't recognise your number.
You are correct that there are checks and balances in place. Taking the US their federal Govt. consists of 3 branches:
Executive - The President & his employees
Legislative - The Senate & House of Representatives
Judicial - The Supreme Court & lower courts
The problem is that the Republicans now control 2 out of 3 and once Trump nominates a Republican Supreme Court judge who the Legislative branch accept then they will have all 3.
The big question therefore is will the Legislative branch act as a check on what Trump wants to do? That remains to be seen.
