Ok I'll try. So you're trying to tell me that referees are trying to gain an unfair advantage in football matches? Actually... that referees are the ONLY people trying to gain an unfair advantage in football matches?

Even though they are not participants in the game? Merely adjudicators?
No I didn't say "they are" I said they are the only person in a football match that can cheat as they have all the power, I did not say they are cheating i said "that can cheat" if they wanted to...

If a player for example Suarez knows that he is going to be seen by millions and the referee handle the ball on the line and is understanding of his actions and his punishment he is not a cheat as he knows the rule is he will leave the pitch and ghana would get a penalty kick...

The referee could have cheated by seeing the incident and not awarding ghana a penalty kick or sending off Suarez, if this happened Suarez wouldn't be classed as a cheat as he would be expecting to be sent off, it would be the Referee for not following the refereeing laws...

Yeah? I thought it was kind of... like... against the rules?
technically yes, morally its debatable

Yeah exactly. That's all I'm saying.

My original post was intended to be kind of light hearted, but I also meant what I said.

You see, I'm quite old fashioned. When I think about the World Cup, I see Carlos Alberto's goal against Italy in 1970, Maradona's solo goal against us in '86, Johan Cruyff, all these great moments and players that remind us all why football is great.

Suarez can be that player. But his handball against Ghana makes me feel dirty for liking football. Like I need a shower or something. Like I should be ashamed of following football.
Ok I think what you're trying to say, is that only referees can ALLOW cheating.

If that is what you're saying then I totally agree. You are correct.

In my opinion though, Suarez was definitely cheating when he handled the ball. He may have known that it was against the rules, he may have known it would get him sent off, he will definitely have known a penalty would be awarded.

But he knows a penalty is NOT a certain goal. And he prevented a CERTAIN GOAL, with his HAND. He attempted to gain an UNFAIR ADVANTAGE for his team. This advantage was turning a *certain* goal into a *potential* goal.

Or let me put it this way.

Say for example, I have just stolen £100 million from you. But it's ok, you can have it back! All you have to do is score a penalty against Uruguay international goalkeeper, Fernando Muslera!

I have turned a *certain* £100 million, into a *potential* £100 million...

Fair?

it wasn't a certain goal though, as there was another player on the line ready to hand ball it or anything if Suarez didn't....

If it's a grey area how come it gets punished with a red card?
What's your point?

If Uruguay don't cheat, then Ghana win the game.

The end.
like i already said it's a grey area morally, some people think he was right to do what he did some don't, but if people think a player elbowing or biting a player to gain an advantage is ok morally then they are sick bastards
