Defenders should have dropped back, they gambled not doing so and Suarez took advantage to score Uruguay's 2nd goal

I'm not saying it was all Gerrard's fault, because other players were obviously culpable too. But the fact is that Gerrard was responsible in a big way for both of Uruguay's goals. He blundered for the first goal by losing the ball, allowing Lodeiro to feed Cavani who crossed for Suarez to head in. But it's the assist he gave Suarez for the second goal with such a nice flick on that will live longer in people's memories. He's an obvious weak link in the team and at the end of this World Cup I expect him to do the decent thing and retire from international football.
Suarez was always going to score against Jagielka..

There are far better English defenders than him not even in the England squad, look at the positives though, England are finally playing like Spain Wink
at least we've scored better goals than brazil, i can't wait till holland or chile destroy you lot
Roys fault team he picked for world cup trust the youth should have started barkley and lallana more. why take lambert to have him on bench? why didnt he use wilshere? future captain? roy isnt the man to take England to a major tropy

I get why this seems strange. But remember, China don't have the best football team in the world. And India don't have the 2nd best.

It's generally about whether your country provides the environment and exposure to the game, for footballers to achieve excellence. And honestly, it's just not here.

Where South America has favelas, endless hours and space for kids to grow up kicking a football about... England has a 'No Ball Games' signpost on every spare patch of grass in the land. Our academies are improving, but they're now teaching the overseas players ahead of our own.

English footballers are NOT born inferior to Spanish kids, German kids, Italian kids. I sound like a broken record, but we have been culturing the talent OUT of our kids. This World Cup was the first in a long time that I have even seen an actual attempt to play decent attacking football. But the amount of English players getting a look-in at club level is low (20-30something%, and still dropping.

We need to redress the balance. The foreign players should be the minority, NOT ours.

I'm not a doom-monger, but my worry is not 'Will we ever win a World Cup again', but will we even get to play in one again?

Agreed on the population thing and academies. Disagree with the rest.

Most of the top south american teams have players that don't play in their own domestic leagues, or its like Mexicans playing in the Brazilian league, so the lack of international starters in the premier league isn't the problem. The problem is, they're not good enough to be regular starters, let alone play for Barca or Bayern. Simply making the premier league more english, won't help the national team. You'll just have a bunch of Henderson's and Cleverly's running around. The issues is the FA, academies and our general mindset.

My ex gf is taking her coaching badges so she can coach a local U21 womens team and she says she's unimpressed with what they're told is considered 'talent'. Basically, they favour physicality and pace (both of which aren't bad things) over technique-that needs to change.

So what you're saying is, having a young English player's passage into the first team of a Premier League football club, blocked by an international player, in 70% of cases, is NOT damaging the national team? Is that what you're saying?

However, I am not suggesting that an entirely English Premier League is the answer. If it were, we would've won every World Cup and Euro between 1968 and 1998. That's why I said the answer would be more of a balance. It's gone way too far the other way.
Phil Neville commentary on England v Uruguay Suarez's winning goal even after seeing the replay, "he's offside"
Roy took too big a gamble in a game like this one and has lost out big time. I would not be surprised if Slovenia and San Marino are already plotting to expose our defence in the Euro qualifiers because at the moment, that defence leaks worse than a burst water main! Suarez was unstoppable!
I have to say I always knew our defence's frailties would never cope without JT or Ashley there to communicate.
Jagielka should never play for England again, he is by far the worst defender to ever grace an England team. To me he has had two poor games.

Costa Rica will be pissing themselves and I reckon to get eve n four or five against them is going to be a tall order, because I reckon it's going to take at least that to probably even finish second.

Sometimes I wonder why we ever stopped playing the Home Internationals.
To me that would have been the best way we could have looked at players individually to see if they were up to scratch for international duty. If we were to revive them then they should be at least kept to u-21 (or maybe u-25) level. To me that would at least a stepping stone from youth level to full international duty.
We can all say that Spain have big problems, but to many of us are now probably thinking our problems are bigger. Not only that Hodgson isn't the man for me for 2016. I couldn't stand us going to the finals in 2016 with a tam that doesn't know how to communicate with each other, keeps possession or
defend. I expect us to be well out of the top 20 teams on the FIFA rankings after this
If Roy is sacked I don't think we should bother getting another coach, we should just let our wonderful press do the job instead!! They seem to know our best team, why not let them pick the team? They always put managers under pressure, so now let's see if they are prepared to put their collective monies where there mouths are. I wouldn't even want Becks anywhere near the England team, he probably would be too embarrassed to be associated with it. I don't think there is a manager in the who would want the job
now. Whatever Dyke's blueprint is, it should be ripped up it just going to set us back even further. And for once joey I agree with you, there are too many foreigners involved
in our game.

we lost to 2 teams that are above us in the fifa rankings so big deal and in those games we had more than a fighting chance

we got some good kids that need a little time to get used to international football can see us qualifying for euros with little or no trouble

how much I wonder San Marino, Slovenia, and the like are quaking in their boots to be facing us. Qualify for the Euros with little or no trouble, u having a laugh? On this form for me wouldn't even finish 3rd in our group. If there is any world cup we can win then I would say it would probably be tiddlywinks at this rate!!

Are you serious. A complete over reaction. Everyone knew England were not going to win the World Cup. What England didn't do was defend well-Cahill being the only decent defender we had and more importantly, we didn't take our chances when in front of goal. England were beaten by two very good goals from one of the best goalscorers in the world. If it was not for Suarez and Cavani, England would have come away from this game with at least a draw. The move that led to Rooneys goal was as good as any team has produced in this tournament.
