if it was a foreign manager this time he would have been sacked before he got off the plane.

Hodgson is a "winner" though, apparently.

England didn't lack motivation. They lacked ability. They lost to Uruguay because despite being the better side for most of the game they made basic errors which gave 2 goals away, which you can't afford to do at international level. England tried hard enough and worked hard enough, but they were poor defensively.

disagree entirely.

with the exception of a small few, many didn't turn up.

*EDIT* small few is probably a bit harsh

do agree that the back 4 simply isn't good enough, though.

So which England players weren't trying then?

His contract always ran until 2016 anyway, so he hasn't been given more years.

England have tried chopping and changing managers before and it didn't produce any improvement or solve any of the problems that England have. Blaming everything on to the manager is shallow, considering that England's problems are much more fundamental than that.

I know but he was given assurances that he'd still be there.

I've no doubt England would have qualified if they had a pro active coach instead of a reactive.

Rodgers and they would have topped the group imo that was billed as "group of death" but was in reality, average.

I accept England's problems don't solely rest rest at Hodgson's door and in no way expect him to resign from such a well paid job.

there seems to be a mental block with England players too.

reality is though, they're overhyped by fans and media alike. all this talk about the premier league being the "best in the world", it is yeah but if the foreigners fucked off it would be shite.

I can't stand the argument of "limit foreign players to give the English lads a chance"

bollocks. if the English lads were good enough they would be playing. Simple as that.
english players should go and play abroad, tom ince turned down a move to inter milan to sign for hull, tbf he may not get in the inter first team so that's why he didn't want to go there, but i bet he would turn down a mid table SerieA team such as Torino or Genoa to stay in england and play for a shit team like hull, who was the last english player to do well in one of the top foreign leagues?
Beckham at real madrid then before that would b mcmanamen at madrid then gazza n platt in italy then before that liniker at barca

coaching wise ok with sir bobby and terry venables both managing barca then roy Hodgson at inter

Rooney's sulking for one didn't help.

Gerrard tried but he looked out of his depth in a midfield of 2. anyone who has watched Liverpool last season (assume Hodgson did) can see that he needs legs around him to play his game.

Johnson hasn't tried, for club or country for about 18 months now.

there was an argument for Terry to be brought but it would "disrupt the squad morale" would it have really mattered? morale would have improved if they were winning games. much as I don't like the man, Suarez doesn't score his second goal if Terry is in that back 4, imo.

Tom Ince probably went to Hull cause they offered him more money, laughably. English players have a premium that doesn't exist in any other country.

to be fair, for the amount of appearances he made, Owen had a more than decent record at Madrid.
and hargreaves at bayern, isn't he canadian though? fact is english players doing well in another country is very rare, unless they get to play for madrid or barca, they aren't interested in going to a team like sevilla, bilbao, udinese or parma and work their way up

agreed, working with different styles and adapting surely couldn't hurt.
