Actor Mark Ruffalo has said that the Hulk will have a much bigger role in Avengers: Age of Ultron, he told Total Film that "[My role's] even bigger than last time, and it's more complex and it has more layers and a bit more arc,".

I read ages ago that he is the central character and saves the day. Rumour is that he becomes so unstable the other Avengers have no choice but to banish him from earth at the end of Ultron. This then leads into standalone Hulk movies based on the Planet Hulk comics, with his return to Earth becoming Avengers 3. Not sure how accurate this all is as its quite a tight time frame to do all this.
