Zaha, Bebe, Felliani, Kagawa (decent player but bought seemingly with no role in mind for him) Nani, Anderson - Utd have paid some serious money for some shocking players in recent years. Might also add just under £40m for Mata too. Again decent player but as with Kagawa was he bought with a role in mind? He was clearly a panic buy in the dying embers of Moyes' tenure as was Felliani at its beginning. With the real possibility of two seasons without Champions league revenues, the resulting penalties in the Adidas contract for non-qualification and the Glazers' debt still needing to be financed they really cant afford to waste so much. With £60m on Di Maria and maybe another £40-50m on two more new players before the window closes there are going to have to be sales to bring revenues back in. Those surplus to requirements - Felliani (good luck getting a fraction of his fee back), Hernandez, Wellbeck, Kagawa, Zaha, Anderson (anyone daft enough to buy him?)

United desperately need a midfield general to infuse some drive into their play. I know Carrick isn't vocal like Keane was but recent displays highlight how sometimes his calming influence and dictation of play can be overlooked.
Carrick alongside Herrera is decent enough for now, problem right now is too many injuries at the same time. I hope Rojo and Di Maria can play on Saturday.

United have only really splashed the cash these past two summer transfer windows, if you look at the past 5 or more seasons, overall Liverpool, Chelsea and City have outspent United.

I doubt if that's an accurate comment. Over 5 years it must be close between Man Utd and Man City, with Chelsea and Liverpool definitely behind them both.

Are you being serious? Before Moyes bought Fellaini and Mata, the most United paid for a player was RVP-22 million and de gea-18 million. RVP and Hernandez together cost less than what Liverpool paid for Carroll Big Grin

Manchester City £439,450,000
Manchester United £342,500,000
Chelsea £473,759,000
Liverpool £351,950,000

Agree while we have spent one hell of a lot of money over the last two seson we have not spent always wisely or in the positions we have needed. The real calamity at the club is in the board room and as much as I respect his achievements, Fergie made some bad choices at times and didn't strengthen the squad in the key areas. Mind you I fear that the Glazers are behind this.
PS Might want to check out Berbatov in the price war though Wink

That site doesn't support your argument. You're fiddling the figures by taking only the gross amounts.

You cite the example of what Liverpool paid for Carroll, which was really £20m since they sold him for £15m, but you inflate the figures by listing him as £35m. Same with Chelsea and Mata. That site shows Chelsea with a profit of £14m, but you list it as a £23m spend.

Yes - and the website you quote proves that I'm right.

If the figures on that site are correct, Man Utd have invested more in their squad in the last 5 years than any other club - which is exactly the point I was making.
Coincidentally the Daily Mail published the following figures only yesterday:
