Pro Evolution Soccer 2019 (PS4);
As someone who has bought every yearly update of the PES games since it was formerly known as International Superstar Soccer (ISS) having played the PES 2019 demo last month something about it left me so underwhelmed that I was very reluctant to buy the full version.However I did end up buying a copy albeit second hand (for £20) from a workmate (who hated it).
I was well aware of the luke-warm reviews the game received where the general consensus was that whilst losing the rights to Champions & Europa League (to Fifa) is a big loss gameplay wise the game pretty much plays the same as last years PES2018 which I would concur with.If anything with a few minor tweaks making passing a lot more hit & miss & inept defending if anything I feel the game has regressed over last years game.Having played about 30 games in various different modes in single & multi player & online the very doubts I had about the the game in the demo came to realization.Presentation was never PES's strong points & this years game continues in the same vein with a few catchy tracks thrown in for good measure.My Club which is the PES version of Fifa's Ultimate Team is still a poor man's equivalent with a very limited number of game modes & poor player transfer network (done through recruiting scouts) where your never really in control of players you want to buy.Playing online against other players is still at times very laggy & becomes a chore to play.
Gameplay wise the Training Games,Master League etc are exactly the same as last years game but when it comes down to the nitty-gritty when playing actual matches (where I've always felt played better than Fifa games) I just found PES 2019 to be most disappointing.As I mentioned earlier passing feels a lot less accurate now (even with assisted passing options) where passing to the opposition becomes a lot more frequent.Defending I found to be completely inept where teammate AI are regularly out of position & are too slow to track back but when playing against the computer it commonly exploits a defensive fault in the game where opposition frequently runs down the wings fires in a low crosses that defenders cannot get to leading to a frequent scoring method.Whilst play & passing seems fast paced actually sprinting with the ball seems less so a bit like driving down the motorway in an empty lane unable to get out of second gear.Skill moves when dribbling around players in the game feel more tacked on & feel a lot less natural & more complicated than in Fifa games.Shooting at goal (one of PES's usual strong points) can at times feel crisp but can also infuriate with often delayed/laggy controls & shooting inaccuracies.
Overall;Another yearly update that offers no real improvement on last years game, but with the omission of Champions & Europa League it just feels inferior to PES2018.
Regardless of how good/bad Fifa 19 turns out to be the gulf between Fifa & PES is just going to get bigger after this disappointment.6/10.
