Microphones Update
As soon as I see someone posting about them here or in the chatroom I groan, it's gotta be the most boring subject but it just won't go away.
I've written about it before but it's time for a catch up.
For years when the presenters wanted to make a live announcement Gallery would turn down or off the music and she would speak into a wireless mic. Too often we just heard music, most painfully when Fernanda made her Christmas message two years ago.
Last year they introduced corded mics which is better because (I think) no announcements have been lost but it is often out of synchronisation with the visual and is spoken over the music which is often too loud. In response to our complaints Gallerys66 has remarked that they are trying to fix the problem and often re-synchronise vision and sound but without regard for live callers who sometimes lose money in the process.
I have speculated before that S66 seek a more robust solution and this post last night might support that.
Conclusions:
1. The microphones issue may be a symptom of a deep rooted technical problem that is not a quick fix.
2. In contrast to the opinions of many, S66 wants it fixed as they've already spent money on microphones, re-synching and Gallery's time.
3. A robust fix requires more money and time.
4. The proliferation of presenters together with the vast increase in platforms must make this more difficult. It wouldn't be possible for one person to manually fade down the music and manually fade up each mic.
5. We don't know the exact technical problem.
6. S66 prioritise other matters.
7. It effects some presenters more than others. Fernanda admitted recently that she anounces a lot and also asked that we advise her of failings as she wants to be heard.
So currently we just wait. My advice would be to try to not let it spoil one's enjoyment and certainly don't blame her.
One word of caution, Last night I watched Priya on BS speak on her mic for some five minutes. No music, very clear, promptly faded in either automatically or by the sound mixer.
Trouble was that she indulged in the hard sell the entire time, once fixed, permanently I would expect to see S66's presenters do the same thing in pursuit of our money.
