That's Sky's way of ensuring channels pay them loads of cash for an EPG slot. Sky don't own the satellites they broadcast on, but they do control the EPG.
It's all about convenience, which is why you can't add non-EPG channels to a Sky digibox without jumping through hoops.
Not only that, it was originally to stop people using the receiver for foreign broadcasts from other satellites.
I don't want to get into a long technical explanation but suppose you had an FM Radio (88 - 108 on the dial) which you could only tune it in to stations between, say, 93 and 96....which is where Sky broadcast...that is how the Sky box is set up!
