But McIlroy has steeled himself supremely well to win the BMW PGA Championship this afternoon after a blistering final round 66 to win by one shot.
With the crowd clearly willing him on the Northern Irishman played some excellent golf down the stretch and birdied the last two holes to seal victory.
Tremendous character and resolve at a very difficult time emotionally for him.
Every credit.

Martin Kaymer of Germany has sealed a superb US Open triumph by 8 shots on a very tough course.
After two opening rounds of 65 Kaymer held himself together magnificently to maintain a strong lead to the finish.
Was going to mention McIlroy's great 1st round at the Scottish Open. Lucky I didn't, given his disastrous 2nd round...
About time they realised that all the pro golfers already have a car. Andy Sullivan wins a trip to space for his hole-in-one :

Europe lead the USA 5-3 after a topsy turvy first day at Gleneagles in the 2014 Ryder Cup.
After the USA took the morning fourballs 2.5-1.5, Europe had a storming foursomes session for the second successive day to build a 10-6 lead going into the singles on Sunday.
However Paul McGinley and his men will be all too aware of what can happen with a 10-6 lead.
Just look at the Miracle of Medinah.
Lets hope tomorrow that Europe are not the Gutted of Gleneagles.
