When we got our first telephone is another memory..that creamy yellow coloured thing with the dial on it. Used to pick up the phone to listen to the brrrrrrr dial tone. I don’t know how my Mam and Dad knew that we’d touched it, must have marked its position or something as we’d suddenly hear “who’s been using this phone”?

There was also the time when my Mam and Dad went out to a dinner dance (the last night out they ever had Sad )I think it was...yours truly being aged 12 or 13 having the job of baby sitting my younger brother and sister who were asleep upstairs...

Nothing on telly that was of interest so my wandering eyes catch sight of the drinks cabinet. What made my gaze fix on the big full bottle of Bell’s whisky I don’t know but, I thought I’ll just try a sip of it...

The taste was absolutely revolting, but I thought I’d have a little more...then more...until some time later, my parents return home to find that between a quarter and a third of the bottle of whisky has gone and then they find me out cold on the floor...

Needless to say I didn’t go to school the following day, the hangover was pure evil, and to this day, the mere smell of whisky makes me want to throw up. Never touched it since that night...

Does anyone remember the fizzy Hubba Bubba bubblegum flavour fizzy drink that came in a pink can in the late 80's (I think) where whilst drinking it would leave a bubblegum sort of coating on the roof of your mouth.Surely it deserves a comeback.

Although I was born in the mid-70's I just don't have much of a recollection of that decade (I was probably too young) so I would definitely say the 80's where food-wise my favourites were crispy pancakes, the pre-dried Vesta Paella & Chow Mein meals & angel delight.

Toy-wise I used to save up my pocket money & would buy Transformers,He-Man,Thunder-Cats & Centurians;PowerXtreme figures.Centurians (that also had a cartoon) were my favourite though where there were 3 characters; Jake Rockwell (Land Operative),Max Rey (Sea Operative) & Ace McCloud (Air Operative) where each character could attach vechicles & weaponary onto themselves. The figures were easy to get but certain vehicles were a pig to get hold of bearing in mind we are talking about the mid 80's where the internet wasn't available & websites to buy that stuff.I started getting into computer games where my first computer was a Spectrum +2 (the one you had to load tapes that took about about 10 minutes to load & would often crash 8-9 mins in.I eventually got a NES & Sega Master System in the late 80's.

My uncle used to have a large collection of films on vhs which I used to sneakily borrow the ones I was too young to watch like Aliens,Predator,Evil Dead, the Nightmare on Elm Streets,Weird Science,Bloodsport,Terminator & the other Schwarzenegar films like Running Man,Commando.80's was a great decade for films many ahead of their time like Terminator,Aliens & Back to the Future.

Music-wise in the 80's I was a big fan of Michael Jackson,Bobby Brown,Shalamar, KC & the Sunshine Band,UB40,Madness & I still think 80's is probably the best decade musically.

Ah the Vesta Chow Mein...a favourite of mine, with the Crispy noodles.felt like the height of sophistication eating that in the 70s... Loved the Findus Crispy pancakes as well with homemade chips and brown sauce, never liked ketchup for some reason.

A few years ago some of the Bond girls were invited to a lunch and some even Eunice Gayson and Shirley Eaton looked pretty good, even one of the hottest women around Valerie Leon was still very attractive.

I used to like Salt nShake crisps but there were others like Rancheros, Chipsticks, Ringos(my personal favourites) and Horror Bags, plus those odd one Outer Spacers which were Beefburger, Pickled Onion and one other flavour. Any of those ring a bell?

Whatever happened to Ringos ? Kids today don't know what they are missing Tongue

Never really got Power Rangers, I thought it looked cheap with the villain in a bad suit!

Remember when everyone wore parka coats where the hood had fake fur around the edge..which absolutely stunk when it got wet from rain. I, like most kids in my year at school had a blue one, but I do remember seeing one or two green ones.

Zipped all the way up, as I remember us all doing during the freezing cold winter of 1978/79, we all looked really strange with our heads resembling some kind of freaky submarine periscope/snorkel kind of shape Bounce

I had a Lord Anthony parka, Snorkels they were known as round my way. I can remember pulling the zip up right high, one freezing school morning, and catching my lip in it eek The blood freezing as I walked to school wasn't very nice.laugh

I remember a brand of crisps called Discos as well. Round crisps which started being sold in around about 1978 when Disco music was having its period of dominance.
Oh yes, I remember Discos too and later Rock n Rollers(cheese and onion and I think salt and vinegar) as the tagline went "New from Golden Wonder, they're called Rock n Rollers..." I really don't know how I remember all this stuff, it just sticks in the mind. Of course who could forget Quavers and Fangs!
I tell you what GM if this thread isn't in the thread of year award in December it wit be a catastrophe as this is easily the best thread around atm!! Big Grin Big Grin

Thanks mate you are bringing back lovely memories..
Foods that I hated...

Right at the top of the list is Cadbury’s Smash...that brutally bad mashed potato that was advertised by those Martian Robots..’they peel them with their metal knives...then they smash them all to bits’ loved the ad..hated the product with a total vengeance..almost as much as the hated school dinners which would have been better suited to have been served to prisoners of war...because after eating that muck we surrendered....

Going to friends birthday parties would also be a problem, as it was absolutely nailed on that my dessert nightmares were a dead cert to be made a reality..over and over again...Jelly and Blancmagne. YUK!!! Absolutely hated them both, and still do...just looking at it in the dish wobbling away..ugh...then the texture of it in my mouth...God I must have looked like a Bushtucker eating trial contestant trying to swallow kangaroo testicles..I just couldn’t do it...in the end I used to make a point of making myself scarce when the puddings came out..

Oh grief I hope not, I am not sure I could stand losing twice Smile but thank you for you very kind words, I am glad you are enjoying it babelover48. More surprises to come shortly.

Carl: Never liked jelly, and still don't but did you ever like Angel Delight? It never seemed to come out like it looked on the packet-it had an odd texture but in those days it was the look and taste we were interested in.
