Harry Kane Had A Touch Of The Ted Rogers.... 3 Penaltys.... 2 Tap Ins & 1 Deflected Fluke.....

The ref, by all accounts, missed the incident live but did not come to the sideline to check the footage for himself.

The referee had the right to check the footage, as he always has the right to check the footage, but on the above occasion he chose instead to trust the advice he was given from the VAR.

I know it's easy to be wise with the benefit of hindsight, but rather than taking their word for it, it would surely have been better in this case if the referee had taken a look for himself.
Interesting in all the coverage give to VAR in recent times I've not heard or seen it made explicit that:

A. A trip to the touch line is discretionary for the ref.

B. The VAR team are allowed to say more than 'You should look at this' to the man on the field. (Mark Lawrenson in particular made great play on how just asking the ref to come to the screen could be seen as an influence on his decision.)

I'm not doubting what you say Mr Bonney, and can see how this would be compatible with the main ref deciding on how much of, the VAR team's opinion he wants to request but I would like to see official confirmation of these points. Do you have a published online source for this?

This is the official FIFA video to explain VAR.

You can see in this video that the role of VAR is to inform the referee on what happened and he then has 2 options, to accept their verdict or to review the incident himself.
