1545 - The Battle of Ancrum Moor: Occurring during the period of uber-heavy-handed 'diplomacy' by Henry VIII towards the Scottish known as the 'Rough Wooing', Ancrum Moor was a notable victory for the outnumbered and beleaguered Scots. Putting aside their clan differences, James Hamilton Earl of Angus and Archibald Douglas Earl of Arran formed a Scottish army that for once reflected national interests and the collective outrage of the Scots at the razing of entire villages by the English and their mercenary allies.
Luring the English force forward and them ambushing them, the Scottish army drove their enemy from the field and even the Scottish mercenaries in the English army changed sides during the later stages of the battle.
Although the war (as such it was) would continue, Henry VIII would not be remembered for his great military record.
