Exactly! Sky give new users a PIN that half the playground probably know how to crack. Not only your kid, but also his snotty nosed friend who comes round to play Zombie Lesbian Armageddon III on the Xbox. Imagine if your bank PIN was printed on your cashcard so a total stranger could use it. Unaceptable, no? But thats Skys idea of protecting kids. They probably say adults should change it, but frankly most adults cant work a toaster and see no need.

Please tell me this was said with tongue firmly in cheek. Otherwise I fail to see your point. Are you backing up my belief that a PIN is perfectly adequate protection, or trying to debunk it?
And you only get three guesses with a Sky PIN, so how many would be succesful now?

How? How can they guess it? If the parents are dim-witted enough to use birthdays, etc as the PIN, then sure the kids might guess it, but why should every adult in the country have to go without because of a few brainless parents who can't control their kids?
A PIN is perfectly adequate. There are 10,000 different permitations for a four-digit PIN, so as long as it's random it's virtually impossible to guess.

Rather than wasting energy disagreeing with ourselves cant we concentrate on what to do about Ofcom?
A PIN is fine for domestic use. Besides Ofcom say it is adequate. The reason Ofcom say it fails is that adults tell their kids the PIN. (And some tell them their bank PIN too - "type it in for mummy, oooh look at the pretty bank notes.". For what its worth I see 50% of the PINS used at Tesco too. But Ofcom say it is adequate
provided you don't tell the kids. And a failure rate of 0.1% (1000/1 million) is good for this purpose.
If PINS are the stumbling point the first platform provider to introduce fingerprint recognition will be onto a winner. Or any other distinctive body part.
