No they aren't. A secret ballot like this one is much fairer.
If voting was done publically the people voting last would have unreasonable power to affect the outcome. If two girls were equal in 10th place they would effectively have the opportunity to decide which of the two would progess, a power which the earlier voters simply wouldn't have had.
The only truly fair vote is a secret vote because it's the only way of ensuring that all voters are in the same position. It needs to be understood that the integrity of any voting process depends on all voters being treated equally.

Thinking like that is a big mistake. You never know what can happen. As Simon Cowell has said several times, when it comes to a public vote nothing is ever in the bag. Besides a good showing is a positive result anyway.
