Beat me to naming him
Is it the number of appearances in premier league by Engishmen currently still playing
That's what I based my answer on!

Steven Gerrard.

Is it English players currently playing who have most appearances for one club?

Lampard for Chelsea.
Gerrard for Liverpool.
Scholes for United.
Carra for Liverpool.
Barry for Villa.
Ferdinand for United.

That's a decent effort but it drifted a little wide of the goal. It's a worthy answer, but not only would Steven Gerrard have to be there, so would John Terry, as when it comes to English players currently playing who have most appearances for one club both Gerrard and Terry would be ahead of Barry and Ferdinand.

Gun33's answer was correct - Phil Neville - and thescientist posted the correct reason for the answer.
