I enjoy reading your posts Southsidestu, you always make some interesting and well reasoned points. I agree with you when you say Colonial powers like Britain and U.S. should educate their population like Rwanda and Germany (with Naziism).

I'd be interested to know, as someone who didn't come through the the British education system, if the gory details of British history are actually fully explored in your school text books. I would assume not, as an example there was of an episode of "Victoria" from last year I believe in which the storyline revolved around the famine in Ireland. I remember some of the social media reaction from British people and how they seemed completely unaware, for the most part, of what happened and the subsequent role Britain played in the starvation and mass emigration of Irish people, in spite of the fact that there was plenty of food being produced in Ireland at the time, it was just being taken and delivered to the rest of the empire around the world. Seemed like this issue and similar issues might be airbrushed out of your history syllabus as many people commenting online were saying they probably should have read about this whilst they were in school.

I imagine it would be tough to read about your own gory history when it comes to issues like the famine, colonialism, slavery etc. but definitely necessary, it's the sort of stuff people need to be informed of.

Agree, the thing is if a black person is racist to a white person it gets brushed under the carpet by the media and the public

I know you watch WWE, look at the insults Sheamus used to get about his very pale skin albeit mostly from other white people, but i reckon at least one black or Mexican/Samoan wrestler must have "joked" about his skin colour over the years, but no one kicked up a fuss about it

I remember learning at school how Briton's devised the first concentration camps and I remember considering the Great Famine and later Churchill's involvement in Ireland too.
Today presumably youngsters learn from the internet and I'd hope that that doesn't pull it's punches either.

I think what would we think if there were statues erected by other faiths of people we knew nothing about and when we found out that they had some dark history that we didn't like - do we protest for their removal?

I am sure there were several plantations I think in parts of the Carribean or other parts of the US that were owned by non whites, but I am not sure if I'm right on that.

I think overall collectively we are debating this issue with sensitivity and respect for each other views.

for me I think it is a stain on British history how we handled the Irish famine and subsequent issues in Ireland. I do think that how we have treated our closest neighbours is a part of our history that we should not repeat ever again.

this is the reason the episode was pulled, not the german thing. the show isn't glorifying the use of the word, it's implying it's antiquated and offensive much like the character making the slur. if you ban this, then it opens up up a massive area of things that could be banned. i don't think it would be possible to censor everything that fails this standard.

everyone needs to take a step back in this regard.
