(11-02-2017 01:50 )greenray Wrote:  Kiss Me Deadly (1955) Mike Hammer (a superbly cynical performance from Ralph Meeker) finds no end of trouble late one night on the highway after picking up a supposed escapee (Cloris Leachman) from a mental institution. From this stunning opening it involves him meeting a series of villains,(Paul Stewart, Jack Elam, Jack Lambert), dames( Gaby Rodgers Marion Carr), cops(Wesley Addy) and random dodgy characters( Percy Helton), against a backdrop of inventive direction from Robert Aldrich and clever, varied camerawork. The dialogue is suitably hard boiled and there's a smattering of noirish cinematography,as well as daytime scenes filmed in Los Angeles. Filmed in the time of the Cold War and it shows it, its an excellent surreal experience. Also starring Maxine Cooper( excellent as Hammer's secretary, Velda) & Nick Dennis. 8.5/10

Sounds good to me. I'll have to look out for that one. I love the classics!

The Spirit of St. Louis (1957)

Billy Wilder's moving tribute to aviation pioneer Charles Lindbergh, played by James Stewart, following the intrepid solo flight from New York to Paris.

Really good flick.

7.5/10

Paul (2011) Simon Pegg & Nick Frost as two scifi nerds in the USA who meet an alien, Paul(voiced by Seth Rogan) who has escaped from Area 51. On the way they pick up devout Christian Ruth, played by Kristen Wiig, and are pursued by Government agents( Jason Bateman, Bill Hader & Joe Lo Truglio) and Ruth's father(John Carroll Lynch). A generally likeable and amusing movie, though not in the class of Pegg & Frost's Cornetto Trio of films. Good acting with Rogan tending to scene steal as rude alien Paul. Also starring Jane Lynch , Blythe Danner & Sigourney Weaver. 6/10

Daybreakers(2009)

Michael and Peter Spierig co-directed this variation of Richard Matheson's novel,I Am Legend.A pandemic has turned the majority of the world's population into vampires, who desperately seek a cure for their affliction. The directors use of great actors and amazing makeup effects help this version nearly reach the same levels of excitement and intrigue that Matheson's original story did.

8.5/10

Passion (2012) Brian De Palma's most recent film and a remake of a 2010 French film Love Crime, things escalate as resentments grow between an advertising boss (Rachel McAdams) and her protegee ( Noomi Rapace). The acting is fine, but this is a rather flat thriller, and the McAdams character is very unsympathetic. Paul Anderson, so good in Peaky Blinders and '71 is wasted in a supporting role. De Palma tries to jazz the film up in the second half with some striking lighting and other camera tricks, but this isn't entirely successful. The ending/solution isn't satisfactory either. Also starring Karoline Herfurth, Dominic Raacke, Rainer Bock, Benjamin Sadler & Michael Rotschopf. 5.5/10

Trainspotting(1996) No need to cover the plot, suffice to say the film is an exciting mix of realism and fantasy, driven by a great soundtrack and one of the best movie narrations from Ewan McGregor. It neither criticises or glamourises drug taking. Beyond the main cast, there's a good supporting role from the ever excellent Peter Mullan. Would be great to catch the recent sequel. 7.5/10

I watched this, for the 1st time, a couple of weeks ago. I enjoyed it a lot. The ending had a nice little twist. I'd like to see the sequel, as I've heard good things about it.
