Quite. A deliberate Russian shoot down is very unlikely. Putin is mad but not stupid.

There are photos on Twitter of a captured BUK Missile launcher near Donetsk....

40 minutes is a long time in Aviation terms and Russia Today are about as reliable as Fox News.

The Ukrainians claim they have phone intercepts which prove it was shot down by Seperatists.

they would say that the fact the US have been really quiet on the subject is telling they dont know and dont want to risk looking like plonkers if it turns out not to be the case

see israel taking advantage they just launched a ground assault into Gaza

The Americans have confirmed it was shot down. Missile origin currently unknown.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but the position regarding responsibility seems to be looking like this.

• the crash site is in the separatist-held area close to the Russian border.

• the separatists have already been very active with anti-aircraft missiles in the last days, shooting down a Ukrainian military transport aircraft among others.

• separatists are in possession of at least one high-altitude-capable "Buk" surface-to-air missile battery (separatist tweets about this have been deleted, but screenshots exist of the now-deleted tweets boasting about their possession of these missiles).

• separatists have support from Russian military specialists of various kinds.

• there are multiple reports and screenshots of the separatists even having directly claimed responsibility for the hit – just in the mistaken assumption that they had again hit a Ukrainian military transport (those tweets were deleted promptly after the true nature of the hit became clear - but can be recovered from the Twitter servers?)

This is why I think Putin is involved.
