yep, that's very bad! somebody fucked up. i see the Ukrainian interior ministry adviser is blaming separatist's and in turn the separatists are blaming government forces.

yeah this could escalate very quickly

I can see this going 1 of 3 ways... None of which involves anyone firing off the big fireworks for the panic merchants amongst us.

1. Ukrainian Government forces dropped a huge bollock. In this case, Western support will pretty much dry up and Ukraine is on its own.

2. The Russians did it. IMHO this is very unlikely as their identification systems have improved over the years, but if they did it could be the beginning of the end for Putin. Sanctions are already squeezing his backers and they won't tolerate much more.

3. Separatist Rebels did it. It seems they initially claimed they'd shot down a Ukrainian Antonov (via Twitter) then quickly deleted it. If this is the case the Ukrainian government will unleash the hounds and wipe the Rebels out. The Russians will have no option but to keep quiet.

you would imagine the Ukrainian government are competent enough to identify any planes flying over their airspace and to ascertain if they're hostile or not. so my money's on the separatists. RIP to those on board.

but why sepratists shoot it down at 33,000 ft rather than shooting it out of the sky when it was landing to resupply troops with a shoulder missile like other aircraft have

Because they're a bunch of peasants who have been given or stolen a state of the art Russian missile system and they couldn't wait to use it.

Latest reports suggest a Ukrainian Antonov was in the area at the time.

This has Putin written all over it

^^^ and his motive is? russia shooting this plane down intentionally makes no sense.
