Equilibrium(2003) In a futuristic Earth where feelings are banned and controlled by drugs, Christian Bale is a law enforcer who starts to have doubts about the system. A clever, different mix of cold and clinical scifi and balletic action/fight sequences with a realistic performance from Bale and good support from Emily Watson. However, its probably this mix of cold/clinical etc which means it doesn't make this a very likeable movie. Also starring Taye Diggs, Sean Bean, Sean Pertwee , Angus Macfadyen & Wiliiam Fichtner. 6/10

I remember that film getting slated at the time. It's actually not that bad. 6/10 is probably about right.

I went to see Ghost in the Shell last night. As a fan of the anime (the two movies and the Stand Alone Complex series), I found it to be really half-arsed. Very much style over substance.

Shadow Dancer(2012) Its 1993 in Belfast and the peace talks are shortly to begin when a British security officer(Clive Owen) recruits an IRA member(Andrea Riseborough) as a rather reluctant agent. The politics aren't too much emphasised in this film, it works mainly as a spy thriller which won't satisfy action fans, with just a couple of set pieces in what is a slow paced movie. The acting of the leads is very good, Riseborough convincing as a mixture of former terrorist and mother with an uncertain future, and Owen who is so good at these character roles with dilemmas. Brid Brennan gives good support as Riseborough's mother but Gillian Anderson isn't given enough to do as Owen's boss. Also starring Aidan Gillen & Domhnall Gleeson. 7/10

Jimi : All Is By My Side(2013) This charts Jimi Hendrix's life from 1966 when he left New York for London until the time of the Monteray Festival in 1967. A film that focuses mostly on Hendrix's relationships with women( played by Imogen Poots, Hayley Atwell and Ruth Negga) and frustratingly doesn't delve much into inspiration and growth of his music, but rather meanders along with so so scenes and script. However, Andre Benjamin is good as Hendrix portraying him as a man of not too many words, occasionally volatile and without many life plans, leading life spontaneously. Poots puts in a striking, emotional performance, and the flavour of the 60s is caught. The film makers weren't allowed the rights to Hendrix's songs, so not an awful lot is featured, but the re recordings sound fine. Also starring Adrian Lester, Andrew Buckley(good as manager Chas Chandler) and Burn Gorman. 6/10

Chef(2014)

John Favreau is excellent as a chef who after being fired from his job, invests in a mobile sandwich shop and gets a new enthusiasm and love for life as he reconnects with his young son.

An excellent live action version of the iconic Manga/anime Sci-Fi film.

Scarlet Johansson is excellent & a badass as Major and the special effects are incredible along with incredible action sequences. Some nice nods/Easter Eggs to the Ghost In The Shell Manga/Anime film throughout the film.

Best seen in imax 3D to make the most of the incredible special effects & action

9.5/10

Watched ghost in the shell in 3D at the Showcase in Nottingham in the atmos screen, by god it was the best 3d film I have seen (I haven't seen avatar) after seeing dr strange in 3d was at the time best one. It seemed to have hints of the matrix and blade runner in it. It is pretty much hard to do a sequel to that film.

Top 5 Celebs To Be On The Channels: Molly Quinn, Stana Katic, Nina Dobrev, Susanna Reid, Steph McGovern

Tyrannosaur(2011) A realistic slice of life, unshowily directed and superbly scripted by Paddy Considine, as Peter Mullan plays a man prone to destructive rages who meets a charity worker played by Olivia Coleman who may able to help him, but she has problems of her own. Fairly grim, with occasional bits of dark humour, this is a superbly acted piece, as well as Mullan and Coleman, Eddie Marsan is excellent as Coleman's husband, and so is Ned Dennehy as Mullan's friend. No easy answers in this film, but it realistically shows the effects, physical and psychological , of human rage. Also starring Samuel Bottomley, Paul Popplewell & Sally Carman. 7.5/10

The Traitors(1962)

An espionage thriller from director Robert Tronson.Patrick Allen stars as a British secruity agent working with the U.S to try and eek out ruthless traitors to their respective nations. Its all made more effective due to the attitudes of the cold war era that echo today's climate of fear and paranoia.
