It's quite sad to see such a great footballer manager lack the integrity and class (as a person) that should go with his managerial talent.
Right, let's bring some reality and common sense to the table, shall we!

All the top managers defend their players in public, and Ferguson is a past-master at it. I honestly don't think that integrity etc comes into it; imagine if someone did something that seriously fucked-up your chances of doing your job to the best of your ability and to the satisfaction of your boss. You wouldn't be best pleased with that person, especially as he/she was not held accountable for their actions whilst you were.

Why should it be any different in football, where the stakes are that much bigger? The referee is human and he has to live by the decisions he makes during a match, right or wrong. But so are the top football managers; cut them and they bleed just the same as the only human refs. Managers have emotions and pressures too, and on a scale that I for one in my job cannot even begin to imagine, and they will - especially straight after a match when emotions are at their highest - say what they mean with their hearts.

These are virtually the only interviews with managers worth listening to as they are raw, unscripted and devoid of all the usual platitudes and bullshit that comes with prepared scripted answers on a Friday morning before the assembled press pack, and should therefore be cherished and not criticised in a game which is already being sanitised way, way too much for my liking.

And knowing Ferguson, he will have said it especially to ensure that perhaps next time a decision might go his way.

On a separate point, my own theory is that someone, somewhere within the bowels of the Premier League may just have suggested to tonight's referee that some form of justice should be done for Rooney's antics last Saturday; two wrongs don't make a right of course, but I've seen this done so many times in the past that it's pretty obvious. And if anyone's going to have a pop, just remember what happens every time a referee gives a corner which clearly wasn't one - yes, he always spots an infringement as the corner is being delivered and blows for a free-kick to the defending team.

Just have to pull you up on that point mate.

In the most recent Merseyside Derby at Anfield Everton were incorrectly awarded a corner at the beginning of the second half when an Everton player clearly kicked the ball out of play. From the resulting corner Silvain Distin nodded the ball in the net to level the score at 1-1. I'm just nit-picking but i thought it was worth mentioningTongueTongueTongue

I know it was Yoda, but the trouble is that some the people who get to read these comments are borderline retards who believe every written word they read. Some of this morning's papers have focused on Ferguson's post-match comments and attempted to paper over the cracks of one of the top-three worst referreeing performances I've witnessed in the past couple or so seasons (Mark Clattenburg Everton 1-2 Liverpool, and that Norwegian ref Chelsea 1-1 Barcelona CL Semi-final 2nd Leg). And of course it's meant to provoke a response - this is a fucking forum after all and it would die in a pool of its own shit if no-one ever posted responses. When even Liverpool and Arsenal fans at work were saying they couldn't believe the ref's incompetent performance then one must start believing there was something amiss...

You know what I meant! And anyway, in the recent Merseyside derby you mentioned, the referee obviously did think it was a corner - although it shouldn't have been, and so let play go on from the resulting corner - I'm talking about when he clearly knows he's made a mistake and then applies the referees' get-out-of-jail card.

I thought that you were supposed to be the great advocate of fair play as you suggested the other day post Rooneygate? Like I said, two wrongs don't make a right. If you'd have said that whilst you detest United, Rooney, Ferguson etc then I'd respect that as everyone is entitled to their opinion, but to one day bleat on about only wanting fair play in football and then a few days later glorifying - and worse still neglecting to pass comment over a whole series of poor decisions - does you little credit.

For fuck's sake, a few years ago I was disgusted and infuriated when the despicable Arjen Robben fell down clutching his face after barely being touched by Pepe Reina and got Reina sent-off for one of the most blatant pieces of play-acting I have ever seen. Then there was the Norgwegian ref on the same ground a couple of years ago who gave Barcelona a seemingly-endless series of extremely debatable decisions against Chelsea in the Champions League semi-final second leg, which equally infuriated me. Even though I'm in no way a Liverpool or Chelsea fan, I felt that those clubs were unfairly robbed on said occasions and was actually outraged - that's wanting fairness in football, not hiding behind supposedly not supporting anyone and yet retaining some deep-felt hatred for United.

I totally respect the likes of Master Yoda, Mitchell, Groundnpound, Phoenix, Ares, and all the others who hate United because we are their rivals and I feel equally towards their clubs, and also because at least they openly display their allegiances to their clubs, but with yourself it's all smokescreens and inconsistencies in your arguments. Fucking hell man, come out of the footballing closet and declare who you support - I'm sure there are counselling and support groups you could turn to if it's that embarrassing for you...Tongue

RE: Football Banter
lindor there many times where man utd have been very lucky with refs, dennis irwin horror tackle in champions league, subbed before the ref can give the red card, dodgy penalties going to them, penalties not given to the opposition, pedor mendes' goal that was yards of the goal line but not given, what goes around comes around.

if the match was at old trafford/csatle grey skull then the penalty wont be given to chelsea, ancelotti would have moan about the ref and fergie would be praising the ref. also have you noticed that when other managers slam the ref they get touchline ban and a fine but fergie gets nothing except a couple of years ago (i think). the premier league and fa boards need independant people on them with connections to the clubs.

clattenburg, atkinson, atwell, marina are proberly the worst refs on the premier league list, the players and managers have no respect for the refs, so wonder the refs make mistakes and this so called respect campiagn is just bullshit by the fa. there are worse behaviuor on a sunday youth matches where dads shout abuse at their kids, refs and coaches.

the refs in the european comptetions (champions league and europa league) are not controled by the national fa's but by ufea, the refs have different whys of refing the game, in brazil the refs give more freekicks, cards, penalties but when the clubs in their equivilent of the champions league the players from the brazilian clubs have hissy fits everytime decisions go against them.

about fairness, its the laws of sport that go not get applied consistently, they left to interpretation therefore one ref makes one decision and another makes a different decision on the same incident. also fifa have told national fa's not to correct mistakes withouth refs admitting to them so the refs need to be more open to why they made the decision to the public through the media on the day or a couple of hours after the game, so they time to cool down and say something not in the heat of the moment, this would then stop the crap that has happen in the media this week and previous weeks.

i support wait for it.......................................northamptonshire county cricket club and the irish cricket team, thats right i am a circket fan but i do follow football, abit of rugby, some winter sports, cycling and athletics, cannot stand tennis, golf, ice skating.

i have problem with man utd, its just fergie and some of the fans who think that everyone should be supportinf man utd

RE: Football Banter
I take your points on board, but it does seem just a tad ridiculous insofar as you seem to imply that United get every decision their way and that this does not happen to any other club in the world.

I don't know the exact statistics regards penalty awards etc, but don't you think that during the near-twenty-year history of the Premiership, considering that Manchester United have been far-and-away the most successful and also far-and-away the highest-goalscoring team in said period, that they have thus spent more time in their opponents' penalty areas and have thus been in more situations where penalties may have been awarded? Have you actually considered this possibility?

And believe it or not, United probably get turned down for more legitimate penalties than any other team, because of the diving nature of the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, who's reputation goes before him, sometimes unfairly.

How come you never mention the likes of Gerrard and his legendary dives against the likes of Sheffield United at Bramhall Lane and Atletico Madrid at Anfield - even Liverpool supporters I know are embarrassed by those two. How about Didier Drogba, Dean Saunders, Thierry Henry, Rivaldo, and all the other divers, face-clutchers, deliberate hand-ballers, etc, etc, etc, none of whom played for United?

You say you are big on fair play, and yet there is no sign of it when you single out one club - a club who just happen to be more in the media spotlight than any other because everything they do, good or bad, is newsworthy and helps sell newspapers! Show a bit of consistency by praising United when praise is warranted, and by criticising clubs other than United for foul play etc and, mark my words, your comments will be more demanding of respect as they will then be seen as more balanced.

It pains me to say it sometimes, but when Liverpool or Arsenal or Chelsea or whoever are deserving of praise then I'm sure that other posters on this thread would admit that my rose-tinted glasses are kept firmly in their pocket! Equally, when United are crap, or transgress, you won't find me bullshitting to their defence.
