RE: Politics - The Non-Brexit Thread.
^Considering opposing Brexit is the the main theme & the common denominator that links all these newly independent MP's I did a little research of how their constituencies voted.Out of the 11 MP's four were in Leave constituencies (Anna Soubry,Sarah Woolaston,Angela Smith,Gavin Shuker) the other 7 MP's were Remain (Anne Coffey,Mike Gapes,Chris Leslie,Joan Ryan,Chuka Umunna,Luciana Berger,Heidi Allen).

Should these MP's stand by their beliefs & convictions & call a by-election I could only see Chuka Umunna,Mikes Gapes & Heidi Allen getting a possible re-selection.I've several work colleagues who live in Anna Soubry's Broxtowe constituency who tell me people are fuming with her & have been calling for a vote of no-confidence post ref result & how she has reacted since. But I suspect whenever Soubry loses her seat she'll slip back into media fame now she has earned celebrity status.I've always felt appalled by the bullying treatment Luciana Berger has received for several years now by certain Party members & MP's & would be one I'd like to see re-selected against the odds but I hear her local party members are actively against her & the local Wavertree council are colluding with Derek Hatton.Over the past few days I've noticed several news outlets have tried to gather feedback & reaction on several of the MP's constituencies & there seems to be a mixture of support, dismay & a distrust with them.Any more resignations would make a GE an almost certainty.

The law does not require them to resign & the rules on recall of MP’s do not allow recall in these circumstances although strangely enough a Labour spokesperson has said in the last 24 hours that they want the rules changed.

I think parliamentary rules state that if a certain % of the MP's constituencies call for the resignation or a vote of no-confidence serves as protocol for a by-election.Other than that I think if an MP commits a crime that warrants a sentence of over a year in prison is another way an MP can lose their seat. But then it comes a question of an MP's conscience & morality if they believe they can stand as a Labour,Tory,Lib-Dem etc MP & their party manifesto in a GE then a few months later resign & stand on their own manifesto which maybe polar opposite to the manifesto they originally stood on.

The rules that were introduced for the process to commence the recall of an MP don’t allow for it to be used in the circumstances of them resigning from their party.

Even if an MP is deselected by their own local constituency party it only means that they would not be that party’s official candidate at the next general election. They cannot be forced to face a by-election.

Despite Ken Clarke voting against every Brexit legislation bar Theresa May's Withdrawal Deal that got rejected in Parliament back in January (Clarke voted for it) Clarke is & always has been a dyed-in-the-wool Tory so I very much doubt he'd defect.Clarke did admit after the 2015 GE that he was standing down in the next GE which in the fixed term parliament act would have been in 2020.But with Theresa May calling the snap election in 2017 (& then blew her majority) he stood again for re-election but has been on record several times since then that he won't stand in another GE.

Derek Hatton has been suspended by the Labour Party after an anti-semitic tweet he sent in 2012 was brought to their attention Bounce

With the main crux of this new 'protest party' is that they all support a 2nd Ref/ Peoples Vote of which Ken Clarke is totally against (he was also against the 1st Ref) & so him defecting wouldn't make sense.Besides I think he's a bit long in the tooth now having seen internal Tory battles over Europe for over 40 years. If another 10+ Tory MP's defect then the Government will have no choice but call a GE as they wouldn't be able to function passing legislation so I can kind of envisage most of those deliberating MP's thinking of defecting sitting on their hands.Plus when those who've defected were questioned about the possibility of a GE they didn't want one as it would be officiating themselves as a political party, present policies, announce a leader but most importantly get financial backing. The worm turns.
