Dinner For One
Infamous short comedy from 1963 with Freddie Frinton, much beloved of the Germans. An extended sketch really, but charming in its way.

New series of LUTHER with Idris Elba back as the unconventional cop and I see that Ruth Wilson is back as mad psychopath Alice-should be interesting. Very gory in parts but intriguing-same with the Agatha Christie reboot of The ABC Murders with John Malkovich. I was reliably informed that the story on screen was nothing like the original story or the David Suchet version of Hercule Poirot.

The basic murder plot was the same, and the identity of the murderer was the same, unlike what this adapter has done with some other Christie stories.

What this new adaptation did - unnecessarily in my view - was try to introduce a whole new "backstory" for Poirot in flashback which cast him in a totally different light, and differs from anything written about him in the book.
It also put in a lot of "backstory" to the suspects and had a lot more scenes of them which are at best only really implied in the book, or third hand by conversations, and many others which I think were just invented (it's a long time since I read the book) presumably to make the adaptation "edgier" and more up to date - having characters use the f-word and call each other sluts and virgins and so on, which obviously the original books written in a more censored age refrained from doing.
(Wink Also this new version seemed to have a surprisingly misogynistic tone in general, given it was done by a female dramatist?)
Personally for me it just took away from the central puzzle and a lot of it felt like padding.

Agatha Christie imho wasn't that interested in wallowing in the psychology of her murderers (at least not until a bit later in her career when she needed to shake things up a bit) but more in the "crossword puzzle" nature of how to fool the reader.
This adapatation seemed less interested in that and more in just how nasty human nature can be and how grim the 1930s were, presumably as an "antidote" to the nostalgia-tinted/"chocolate-box" view of the period in previous adaptations, but to my taste it went too far the other way and just presented pretty much everybody as scumbags.

Amusing yet indulgent fluff.
Arrow/Elseworlds pt 2 of 3
More gently paced for a long time, although the most evil being in the cosmos makes an unwelcome cameo, presumably shot before he went into the Jungle.
It says a lot that explanations are rather desperately forced in the last few minutes, along with a total change of gimmick from much of the 2 episodes we've seen.
Supergirl/Elseworlds pt 3 of 3
Rather frenetic, but whilst our heroes use "you're really a hero underneath" talk, nobody tells Deegan he's not up to his task - and why would he make himself Superman with a new face? The anti-climactic ending just to tee up next year didn't entirely work either.
