I thought the forging of the rings and the raising of the cauldren where magical.

Best shot of the night? the Queen looking bored out of her mind picking at her fingers and completely disinterested opening the ceremony. May be she was ill?

P.S. iv just got back from Phobos, it was a long trip but really enjoyed it

Even some respect for Lord Coe & his team, for deciding to give the young athletes the job of lighting the flame, and therefore avoided the arguments later about who it should have been had either Sir Steve Redgrave or Daley Thompson had done it alone.

They shouldn't have anything to do with Eric Clapton given his views on a "white only" Britain. He's probably passed out after seeing so many foreigners in the country!

The flame won't last long in this typical British weather. I imagine it will be going out quite a few times which probably would still be quite an embarrassment for lor Coe and his team. Not being able to guarantee the good weather probably that many foreigners associate with a typical British summer.
Unless they have a designated spot in the stadium where it will be kept largely dry and out of the rain. I thought we wwere supposed to be having a dry spell. How typical of the Met Office to say one thing one day and something completely different the next. I should think many visitors won't stay in Blighty long if it keeps raining. i'm pretty sure once that the flame went out in Montreal in '76 and someone lit with a cigarette or something and the IOC weren't very happy. does anyone remember this?

Have to say congratulations to everyone who planned and took part in the opening ceremony. BRILLIANT, and that's from an Olympic sceptic!! Very well done to you all

Looking at world reaction it's clear that we've scored a major triumph with the opening ceremony. Everyone seems to agree that it's the best Olympic opening ceremony ever seen.
