If Scotland's share of national debt is a minimum of £56bn she as good as won't be making any money from the North Sea 'cash-cow' for 4-7 years after the start of independence leaving potentially just 23-33 years of production left before the supplies are exhausted (all if independence took immediate effect, which of course it won't).

The longer Scotland takes to become independent the less time she has left to make money from it's share of the oil fields. It is believed that it would take 18months up to two years to transition to independence thus leaving even less time for Scotland to make money from oil sales.

Here is an interesting article (link below) that suggests as to what might happen following a 'yes' vote;

A bankrupt economy, North Sea oil rights sold to China and Shetlanders defecting to Norway. What if Scotland DID go it alone?

Enjoy!

what an unbelievable article, from the daily mail. I mean how on earth has any other county managed to become independent without selling their biggest assets to china.

Just typical scare tactics from the No side. The most negative campaign ever run

RE: Scottish Independence
Ive heard abouf the shetlanders considering going independent if scotland votes yes before was on bbc sunday politics

thats the problem with both campaigns both are lying bout what would happen cos no one knows the yes campaign instead of counter arguing say Westminster intefering its there default setting

get a feeling if you do go independent a lot of you will be disappointed with what u get as a settlement including oil revenue

I'd say that Darling was a clear winner in the TV debate and Salmond missed his big moment to swing the vote.

I wanted to watch it live, but the STV stream crashed for some reason.

However, from the clips I've seen and commentary, Salmond lost - particularly on practicalities such as the currency.

I think you're right in that this was his big opportunity to influence the undecided - and he failed. Personal remarks about Darling also didn't help - he should be above this.

I agree about the currency. Salmond clearly took a beating on that issue. Otherwise I thought the debate was very close and even.

No reason why Scotland should not be an independent nation. The "but I don't like salmond/ sturgeon" doubters should realise that it is Scotland's independence they are voting for, and whoever is in power at the moment will fade in time. Be honest, who wants to be ruled by Cameron/Clegg FFSannoyedannoyed

RE: Scottish Independence
For the record, I am English and I sincerely hope that the Scots vote 'no'.

In the unlikely event, however, that they do vote for independence I will sooner blame the 'no' campaign and its English backers than the nationalists. The negative campaigning and scare tactics are deplorable. They should be ashamed of themselves. They should be spending their time, energy and money trying to communicate why Scotland gets a better deal within the UK than outside it. Instead, we get a constant stream of utter b*****ks about currency and trade and debt and passports and defense, etc... And it is all articulated in such ridiculous hyperbolic language. If I were Scottish, I might vote 'yes' just for spite at being treated like a naughty school child.
