Just a couple of sites I found useful when I started out. I've been using Photoshop at a high level for about 7 years now and I still haven't even scratched the surface in terms of the shear amount of features available.

TBH framing doesn't require much effort as a simple one is just a canvas size adjustment and then add the frame you want.

Think of layers like the old acetate on top of the original picture. It allows you to adjust things without destroying the original image. They are a must for pro editing as they are hugely flexible allowing you to alter things quickly and also fine tune those adjustments at any stage

Composite images. Well you said you needed to learn quick. Composite images are easy, good composite not so depending on how much you want people to think it is just one image. I can't really give you a one stop solution to isolating something out of an image as depending on what you are trying to do different techniques work better than others.

Can I put it politely though. Don't use Photoshop CS4. If you're struggling with knowing how to approach basic editing you'll only get frustrated. Come back to it once you are more familiar with editing. A better solution would be it's little sister Photoshop Elements or something similar

i know what you mean about getting frustrated, i am getting there tho, i've got the hang of a few things on it.
i've used other software for croping, resizing, framing etc. now i'd like to learn it on ps.
the problem with the framing is i cant find it on any of the menus.

I molested myself last night, i tried to say no, but i knew i wanted it.

Are you referring to cropping BigChuck?

If so, this is the crop icon (its in the vertical dock on the left). Click it, select your desired framing using the mouse, and to crop either hit 'Return' (maybe 'Enter' on a PC) or go to Image/Crop using the top menus.

no cropping 'I've mastered, lol I'm talking about putting a photo frame style thing round the outside, I've just did the adjust canvas size thing, to give a plain border to it(thanks red)

on other programs I've got you can add, a beveled frame, antique style frame, etc, is there suck an option on ps?

RE: photoshop users have a look
ok i can now do framing, sort of. lol

i also get the basics of layers as well, thanks for your help guys.

i want to be able to cut something from one picture an put it on another,

so far, i get the picture i want, select and cut the selected item, i then go and open the other picture, i select new layer, then paste the item. the pasted item then appears massive on top of the picture.

I've tried to re size the picture before i cut it, but thats a bit hit or miss to get it to the right size.

is there away of adjusting the size of the pasted item within the layers option? or am i going about it the wrong way?

any help or tutorials are much appreciated.

RE: photoshop users have a look
I've been using Photoshop for years now just making sigs and tidying up pics but I'm still a beginner, the only reason I can at times get good results is cause I cheat. There are tons of video tutorials out there, youtube is good for this and all you have to do is copy exactly what they're doing it couldn't be easier.
Plus some websites make psd files available and pretty much all the work is done for ya so you can just slightly modify it.

Personally though I liked Microsoft Digital Image Suite for messing about with pics, it's not as powerful as Photoshop but it also didn't make you feel like you needed a degree to do a few basic tasks.

Anyway to answer you're question the pic you've cut out and pasted into a new layer can be resized by using Ctrl +T, then hit & hold shift and use the mouse to resize it from the corners, holding down shift will ensure that you don't mess with the dimensions.
