Even as a Leicester supporter I don't believe that.

If playing for Man Utd helped then Carrick would have been ahead of Drinkwater anyway and if playing for Arsenal helped then Walcott would have been ahead of Townsend.

Interestingly enough I've heard the same argument in reverse, that Drinkwater only got picked in the first place because he plays for the champions, and if he played for a lesser club (non league winner) then he wouldn't have been considered.

Troy Deeney, the captain of Watford, made this specific argument on TalkSport recently, saying that Drinkwater's sudden appearance in England squads shows the benefit of playing for the country's top club.
As per above. It's an interesting debate. I believe that if Drinkwater was at one of the 'Big 5 + Spurs' he'd have made it. Also agree though that playing foe the league champions has helped. Having said that, if you finish champions then it stands to reason that a fair few players in the team would be in the top echelon of players in their various positions.
Rashford is an interesting case. If he'd played for somebody other than the big 6 would he have got the call to even play for England never mind go to the Euros? I don't think it's just an English conundrum though. I remember when Louis Saha joined United from Fulham I think? Had never been in a French squad. Signed for United and before he'd played a single game for United - due to the timing of his move and the international window - he was called up to the French squad. Scored 20 odd for Fulham but never got the call.
Yes. I realise my latter two points sound like United hate but they're not I promise! Wink

Well Luke Shaw went to the World Cup in 2014. He was the same age then as Rashford is now and he played for the mighty Southampton. The experienced Ashley Cole of Chelsea was offered a place on the standby list.

True. But my point is Rashford has played 11 games of first team football. Shaw had played first team football for 2 full seasons with 50-60 appearances.
Isco not even in the Spain squad, no Juan Mata, no Diego Costa, no Gabi, Fernando Torres, Santi Cazorla, Javi Martinez, Saul Niguez, all left out. An embarrassment of riches you could say. And in this thread people are disappointed over Danny Drinkwater not going for England.

I guess Costa will be very upset - he has had a poor season he probably will face going on a Chelsea summer tour or going back to Spain for a new club..
Let's face it though Spain are n the same position as us - trying to build a team for the future.

When we play Portugal before Euros (and if Ronaldo plays) I hope someone has the good sense to crock him so we don't have suffer the fate of him winking at getting Rooney sent off in 2008, The winker!!
still haven't forgiven him for that...be sweet if Rooney did it to him!!

But yet look at this stat - this is a team with fewest players picked from a title winning club!!
And I still believe Rashford could have waited a year before playing for England.
And where's Luke Shaw now?

Agree 100% about Rashford give the guy time he's 18 & only played 18 senior club games & as for Shaw , to be fair to him he's recovering from a badly broken leg .
