In the build-up to Last Jedi, I decided to watch all the previous Star Wars in order.
It's the first time I re-watched the prequels and, God, it's been painful.
I thought they were each pretty shit when I saw them the first time around, but this time I didn't even have the enthusiasm of seeing "the new Star Wars movie" to carry me through. Just utterly painful.
Hard to pick the worst of the three, to be honest. Phantom Menace seems to be built around the talking frog and that kid that can't act and it ends with a couple of 'battle scenes' that are just early-days CGI wankfests. A bitching light saber fight though...
Attack of the Clones might have been saved by the whole Obi-Wan versus the bounty hunter detective story ... but it also had all those unwatchable bits of cringe-worthy dialogue between Anakin and Natalie Portman. Just awful.
Then Sith had a couple of decent moments, but it all builds toward a monumental letdown. That moment when you realise that three entire movies -- over six hours of your life! -- have built-up to a bullshit scene where Anakin turns into an automated, asthmatic version of a B-movie Frankenstein. It also puts Chewbacca through the indignity of screaming like Tarzan while swinging from a vine over an ocean that doesn't appear to have any trees whatsoever in sight. (At least I think it was Chewbacca. At the risk of sounding racist, the Wookies all look the same to me...)
George Bloody Lucas! He took the most beloved franchise in the history of cinema and turned it into a shit sandwich.
...but if I had to pick one as "worst film"...?
Phantom Menace.
Talking frog ... nuff said.
