Unusual video download patterns.

Well it seems we don't have to worry about this any longer, as all the Mega sites have now dropped the reward system, so no more points are awarded. Needless to say I'm a little pissed at them, as I had over 100,000 reward points in my account, and now I've lost the lot. annoyed

I don't know if they are flannelling us again but if you take them at their word you may get your bonus points back. This is the message at the bottom of my account page:

The rewards program is currently under renovation. Rewards signup and redemption are unavailable while we work on a new and improved system.

I never received a reply to my most recent and extremely polite Enquiry about the download counters. Maybe it's down while they overhaul their system.

After 28 days (a company record) it looks like the Megaupload download totals are being updated again. I was hoping that all the ones that took place during the last four weeks would be added to the totals but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Regarding the reward points, that information is still missing from my account page.

I'm going to have a stab at estimating the extent to which Megaupload exaggerate the video download figures.

I uploaded a number of videos to Hotfile in September instead Of MU and have monitered the download numbers. The chart shows the average download total for seven videos of seven different telephonists on Hotfile and the average of each of their previous videos (M-1) on MU and their subsequent videos (M+1) also on MU.
The MU videos have 2.5-3 times the number of downloads that the Hotfile ones have recorded.

The next chart shows my total weekly downloads. The three gaps are the periods when the MU download counters were not being updated. This also indicates a two to threefold increase in the downloads since last November.

I noticed previously that just clicking on the download link registers as a download on MU but was doubtful that this could account for the inflated figures, even taking into account that the vids are sometimes "temporarily unavailable" and that some people may click on the link many times when this occurs.

Another possibility occurred to me when I read the post below.

This video which was over six months old had a three hundred percent increase in the download total in October/early November. It looks like one determined and methodical onanist has watched the streamed video several hundred times and that this probably accounts for the massive increase in the download total.

You would think that Megaupload would have fixed this bug by now given that I drew their attention to it nearly a year ago. Perhaps they think that the inflated figures encourage more people to use them as a host.
