Example:

File Just Uploaded Last night

Geri BS 21-01-12 Last.avi Size 73,480KB or 71.7MB Rapidshare Size 75.24MB

Now you can see the difference.

Yes, the difference in ratio between your file on your PC and your file on RS, is approximately the same ratio between base 2 and base 10 in the example given in post 2 here, which suggests that RS's platform reports files sizes in base 10.

For example, this file in my RS account is listed on their site as being 5.8MB (base 10). I download it and it shows in whatever download manager I use (Safari, Firefox, JDownloader, Speed Download) as being 5.5MB (base 2). Once downloaded it then shows in the directory on my computer as being 5.8MB (base 10). I suspect if you were to download the file it would show on your PC as being 5.5MB as your PC reports file sizes in base 2.

In computer speak
1KB = 1024 bytes
1MB = 1024 Kilobytes = 1048576 bytes
i.e. its about 5% larger than 1 million bytes which what you see

RE: Rapidshare
If you're really concerned about whether they are tampering with the files, you can always use checksums to ensure the file is identical to the one you uploaded.

MD5 are the best as it's pretty much impossible to tamper with a file and get the same checksum, which isn't necessarily true with others. Take the md5 of the file on your pc, download it from RS and take the md5 again, and they should be identical.

Rapidshare also has an online md5 option. In the filemanager section of your account, look for the 'Export file data' option (highlight a file, and the filename appears in an address bar, just under that is a toolbar, the option is 4th from the right, looks like an app window with an arrow across it). Click that, and it opens a pop-up 'Link Exporter' window, where you can select some files and get the download links and other info, including md5. The various information is presented in a copy&paste box, and obviously, the md5 should match that of the original file on your pc.

Strange Rapidshare problem
Could really use some help with this. Whenever I try downloading a rapidshare file it stays at 0% for about 5 seconds and then a message by windows 7 (I think) comes up saying the file couldn't be downloaded. This has never happened before. Other sites such as depositfiles work fine when I try to download stuff. I tried turning my internet security off but it still wouldn't download. Any help would really be appreciated.

RE: Rapidshare
Wazo PM'ed me that link to make me aware of it. Wink So thanks mate. Big Grin

This is really going to hit the download rates of the files posted on here. Sad And as a result, going to make the links become dead quicker. And all this after re-uploading all that content. Sad

It is really making me think whether it's time to just stop posting vids. As unless your willing to pay, it's becoming impossible to do anything. And I don't see why we should have to pay, just to make vids available to other forum members.

Rapidshare are providing there own stick to beat themselves with. I mean a 30kbps download limit for free users is a fucking joke, considering it's us that's keeping them in business. annoyed

I'm going to have to chill a while and decide where I go from here. Rolleyes

RE: Rapidshare
I'm surprised there has been no email from them about the change in conditions.
I regularly receive emails (about 5 or more a week) from them informing me that some file will be deleted in the next few days, since it has not been downloaded in the last 30 days.
I stopped uploading new stuff to them some time ago. My vids are fairly small filesize, but the new rules will obviously mean less downloading and I suppose the rate of deletions will increase.

RE: Rapidshare
I'm seriously considering switching to http://www.mediafire.com/

They don't seem to delete files as long as you use your account at least once every 150 days. Which wouldn't be a problem to the likes of me, that uploads something almost every day.

It would mean having to split larger files into 200Mb chunks, as that is the limit for free users. But there download speed doesn't seem to bad.

I was thinking about http://bitshare.com But there faq's don't match up with what you get as a free user. So that put me off right away.

I will have to do a little digging and see about other alternatives. But I can say Oron it a definate no go area for me.

Since the switch to rapidshare ive downloaded FreeRapid and its worked wonders. If a file is 2 parts or more, just right click and copy each link, hit start than it downloads everything one after the other, all within the program. Basically ill load 2 or 3 vids and when I check later there all done without having to leave my browser open. Very convenient.
