Is it safe to download rapidshare files, if I don't have any anti virus protection?

Yes and no It's as safe, and as dangerous, as downloading anything from the internet.
A lot depends on the type of file you are downloading, and the source of the file (and also the operating system of your pc). If it's a video from a link from a well known vid poster on this forum, go ahead, it's almost certainly safe. If it's some kind of executable file, either on it's own, or wrapped in a zip or rar, and you got the link from some unknown and untrusted source while surfing the nether-reaches of the net, then proceed with utmost caution, and expect the worst.

For the record, I spent maybe 5 years downloading stuff from the net without having any anti-virus installed, and never had any problems, because I took simple precautions about what I downloaded and from where. If you aren't so sure, then I'd strongly advise you get some protection in place, there are some decent free anti-virus packages out there.

It actually ruined my laptop a couple of years ago, when I downloaded a rapidshare file with rar attached to it. It did so much damage my laptop that I couldn't even access the internet and sometimes, even sometimes when I turned on the laptop and the desktop came up, the screen would all of a sudden go blue with writing I couldn't understand. It was like the writing you would see in the Matrix.

These days though, there haven't been major problems like a couple of years ago with most rapidshare files, maybe thats because the files have mp4 attached to them. By the way, I have Norton 360 anti virus software, but its expired, so these days, I have been a little more cautious about downloading rapidshare files just in case I might damage my laptop again

The problem is not just with rapidshare, it's any files you download from anywhere, so be cautious about any files, particularly those on file sharing sites. It just so happened that the file you downloaded was on rapidshare, but it could easily have been elsewhere.
And the files to watch out for are mainly the executable files. As a general rule things like videos or music are OK.

Just a heads up, for the past halfhour I've been hovering around 1mb/s download speeds from RS as a free user. Maybe they brought back the happyhour? Either way I've cleared nearly a gig in 10minutes.

I spoke to dirk recently and they have been blocking some of his re-uploads. Also, with their new service changes coming into effect on November 27th, Rapidshare will no longer be worth using for uploaders even with a premium account.

I hope all uploaders boycott Rapidshare, the cunts.
