In the 1990's it was cropped down to 90 feet to promote growth after suffering from fingal rot. It came down in a storm in 2005. To keep the tradition it was replaced with a new young tree which had been planted outside the playing area in 1999 as a planned replacement. After it was moved inside the playing area in 2005, ground redevelopment brought the boundary in & in is no longer in the field of play. Any ball which hits the tree is counted as a four, including those that flick the top of the tree & clear the playing area. There are only 3 indisputable cases of a ball clearing the tree for 6. In 1925 a little known Sussex batsman Arthur (Jacko) Watson. 1928 the great Learie Constantine achieved the feat playing for the West Indies tourists. Lastly a Kent player & another west Indies star, Carl Hooper in 1992.
