Rory supposedly a big favourite for Quail Hollow this weekend.

RE: USPGA - Doddle - 14-05-2025 13:56

He's been paired with Scheffler and Schauffele, to prove the great American sense of humour.

Jordan Spieth will be aiming to match McIlroy in achieving the career slam.
The US PGA is the only major missing from his collection. Should be an excellent tournament. Over the last 4 or 5 years this major has provided some very entertaining golf.

I didn't know Spieth was chasing one until they mentioned it on 5 live golf the other night. Would I be right in thinking that Quail Hollow is not a very forgiving course if you make a mistake? I think with all the attention on Rory and Jordan we could end up with a surprise winner of this one and for that I could see Scheffler probably being the one to sneak it.

I don't get chance to play that much golf, but I suspect that's a phrase that applies to every golf course laugh

RORY - +2

RE: USPGA - Snooks - 15-05-2025 23:05

For all the hype over McIlroy, Spieth, Scheffler, Schauffle and DeChambeau none of them really sparkled on the first day of the championship.

Instead Jhonattan Vegas of Venezuela leads on -7 after a late barnstormer of a round of 64. Aussie Cam Davis and Ryan Gerard of the US also excelled on a testing Quail Hollow course. They both rattled in excellent -5 rounds of 66. There are a gaggle of players at -4 including Europe Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald. Bob McIntyre had a good opening round of 68 to sit at -3 and former US Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick did likewise. Scheffler scrambled to -2. McIlroy had a stinker and sits at +3 after a very underwhelming 74.

I get the feeling that if Luke Donald can keep things together and calm, he could win this. Very much think Rory, Scheffler, Schauffle, De Chambeau, Spieth have to put extraordinary rounds together to even make cut which if the conditions don't change much could be around +2 or +3 over.

RE: USPGA - Snooks - 17-05-2025 00:17

Jhonattan Vegas holds a one shot lead heading into the weekend after a -1 round of 70 which could have been a whole lot better had he not double bogeyed the final hole.
Si Woo Kim blasted a brilliant 64 to be two off the lead, while Matthieu Pavon shot a 65 to also lie at -6. Matt Fitzpatrick produced another solid round of 68 to match his first round score and therefore be left at -6.
Scottie Scheffler is ominously placed at -5 alongside a storming Max Homa who roared into contention with a 64.
Bob McIntyre went round in 70 to sit on -4 and be four shots off the lead.
As for Rory McIlroy, well he had a topsy turvy; rollercoaster of a round of 69 which was just about enough to make the cut at +1.

I was pretty close on where the cut would be made, I can't see Rory winning it from there, it's a big ask but he has done it before, but I think a lot of good luck will be needed. With Spieth missing the cut, the PGA curse strikes again for him, I wonder how many more chances he'll get to win it. He'll probably spend some time preparing for the Open. With Aronimink (I think I spelled it right) hosting the US PGA in 2026, it might be a course set up for Spieth to win.
