RIP Robin Smith

Sad news that former England Cricketer Robin Smith has Died aged 62

Smith played for Hampshire across a 21-year period between 1982-2003, captaining the county between 1998-2002.

His ODI top score of 167 not out, against Australia in 1993, stood as an England record for 23 years until Alex Hales scored 171 against Pakistan in 2016.

Smith averaged 43.67 in Test cricket, hitting 28 fifties and nine centuries, with his top score of 175 coming in 1994 against West Indies and their feared pace attack of that era.

He was a South African, who played for England and lived in Australia. He was much travelled.

Very sad, one of my all time favourite cricketers to watch. fearless against fast bowling, best know for his square-cut that was hit with such ferocity it often reached the boundary in a split second with little chance of fielders reacting.
He was at his best against the West Indies at a time when short -pitched bowling was common, he suffered a fractured cheekbone in the 1995 Old Trafford Test, after being hit by a vicious delivery from Ian Bishop. Courtney Walsh broke his jaw in the Antigua Test in 1990 with another short-pitched delivery having already suffered a broken finger in the same innings, he bravely carried on.
His Test Mach career ended early which was accelerated by the emergence of Shane Warne, he was perceived to have a weakness against spin bowling which seemed harsh given the quality of spinners around at that time, he still had a healthy average & had much more to offer.
Warne cited Smith as a reason for choosing to join Hampshire, the two shared the same birthday & became great friends.
One of those players who was very popular among teammates & opposition & greatly respected by all, you would never hear a bad word said about him, a genuinely nice bloke.

I think of him as having had a look of Ron Perlman. but I may be recalling someone else. Sad anyway RIP

Very much echoing Boomer's post - affectionately known as "Judge" in cricketing circles. and certainly lived up to that on the cricket field.
I think back then England had one of the best middle order line - ups with him around and to think he played and dealt that West Indies pace attack with very little protection shows just how fearless he was. there are some great pictures of him on Facebook.
