Eh? I thought this billions of pounds 'divorce bill' was made up of commitments to spending that we had already made? AFAIK it wasn't a fee for leaving as such. If we stay in we will still end up paying this in other words, no? (Over a very long period obviously; same as the 'divorce bill' was to be paid over a very long period.)

Yes if we stay in we will still pay the 39 billion (current estimate).

This is a direct quote from a House Of Commons briefing paper informing MPs on the principles of the financial settlement:

So the ERG didn’t back May’s deal because with the Irish backstop we could be trapped in a Customs Union. Labour want a Customs Union but did not back the deal even though it starts with the transition period and the final trade arrangement whilst not yet negotiated may have to be a Customs Union.

Corbyn wants a General Election and not a 2nd referendum and will likely call another no confidence vote next week at which point the ERG & DUP will probably back May again.
