Monty Python reunion
This is something that most people thought would never happen. The 5 surviving members of Monty Python are to reform for a stage show. The Python reunion is expected to be announced officially at a press conference in London on Thursday.

RE: Monty Python reunion
It must be over 30 years since they worked together. They are all in their 70s now, almost my age!

I wasn't a die-hard fan and could take or leave them, with the exception of Life of Brian which was their finest hour IMHO. I hope whatever they do is good though, because if not, it could be a disappointing epitaph to an otherwise beloved legacy.

RE: Monty Python reunion
Many younger people, whilst thinking that Python were "ok", can't see the reason for the adulation, and I would agree that if you were watching the sketches for the first time they look dated and "ordinary" by today's standards.

What is forgotten, of course, is that there was nothing like this before them (the Mary Whitehouse brigade were apoplectic at the time as they regarded sketches about eg mincing vicars as scandalous).

The word "groundbreaking" is overused but in Python's case it was certainly appropriate. Alternative comedy would have developed in some shape or form but the leap forward made by Python was of incalculable value and the current day comedians owe them a great deal of gratitude.

RE: Monty Python reunion
I think that's a fair point. Having become aware of them in the 80's as I did, my generation already had a comedy 'revolution' in the shape of the alternative scene. Cutting edge comedy for us was politically charged satire and irreverence, whereas cutting edge comedy in the previous decade was the surrealism of the Pythons.

I imagine that in the beginning, they were to television audiences what The Goons were to radio listeners. In a world of Bernard Manning, Jim Bowen, Frank Carson et al, Python was probably the entertainment equivalent of an LSD trip Big Grin

EDIT: Judging by Twitter, they still create a buzz after all these years!

RE: Monty Python reunion
From Wikipedia

Monty Python’s Flying Circus (known during the final series as just Monty Python) is a British sketch comedy series created by the comedy group Monty Python and broadcast by the BBC from 1969 to 1974. The shows were composed of surreality, risqué or innuendo-laden humour, sight gags and observational sketches without punchlines. It also featured animations by Terry Gilliam, often sequenced or merged with live action. The first episode was recorded on 7 September and broadcast on 5 October 1969 on BBC One, with 45 episodes airing over four series from 1969 to 1974, plus two episodes for German TV.

If anyone hasn't seen it, here's the eulogy from John Cleese at Graham Chapman's funeral in 1989. So perfect.
