I have always thought there is something rotten at the top of our society, people who think they are above the law because of their wealth, fame or political connections, and i find it very hard to believe that the likes of Jimmy Saville, Rolf Harris and Cyril Smith could have gotten away with such sickening crimes and for such a long period without others helping to cover up their activities.

Please tell me this is a joke post? The guy has been convicted of being a serial paedophile over a number of years. Children have the right to be protected from sick individuals like him and the only way to make children safe is to remove the threat wherever it is found.

Not a joke post I assure you. He has done some very sick things but at his time of life he should be respected and allowed to enjoy the last years of his life.

I think we will have to beg to differ here. At his time of life? He is just as culpable in his 80's as he would be in his 20's or 30's and what is there to respect when he has committed one of the foulest of society's crimes.
Children are among the most innocent, vulnerable and defenceless members of society and deserve protection from those who would prey on them.
Are the children that he has abused able to enjoy the rest of their lives? Because it happened 20 or more years ago doesn't make it any less serious or forgiveable. The same arguments of forgiveness are to be heard when some wizened old 80 year old former SS concentration camp guard is convicted of war crimes he commited when in his youth. Some crimes attack the very fabric of society but society doesn't have the right to forgive and forget...only the victims have that right.

Sorry bytor, I didn't post that. See my above apology. I'm on the theory that being a paedophile is the worst anyone can do and he should definitely get life sentence. Perhaps even the odd whip to get him into shape before his horrendous presence is finally destroyed.

Nobody covered anything up. Quite the opposite. Jimmy Saville was confronted several times about allegations concerning him but there was never any proof of wrongdoing.

The main problem was always the reluctance of victims to come forward. Look at the Rolf Harris case. Several apparent victims only came forward during the trial itself.

The simple fact is that people felt their word wouldn't be believed against that of a celebrity and therefore didn't report what happened. Let's hope it's different in the future.

Of course there was a cover up, in Savilles case there are people at the BBC who have come forward to admit they knew about what he was up to but said nothing and in the case of Cyril Smith it,s been alleged that the police were ordered to drop an investigation and to hand over evidence relating to his crimes.

Saying nothing doesn't constitute a cover up. They said nothing because they couldn't prove anything.
