Song Of The Year... ...Record Of The Year... ...Music Video Of The Year

Another year, a little older, even less up to date with new music and finding it ever harder to find and become aware of new records and tracks that I like...

As with the thread that was created for this last year, neither the song, record (LP) or video have to have been released this year, they just have to be something you've heard for the first time (a handy proviso if like me you're not always quite up to date with new music). The song can be a cover, and doesn't have to have been released as a single. But, no compilation albums should be selected for your album of the year.

It'll be good to hear everyone else's choices, but in the meantime here are mine...

Song Of The Year... ...Temper Trap - Sweet Disposition

Choosing a song wasn't easy for me this year. Aside from a couple of stand-out albums, there's been very little in the way of new music that's stood out for me. However, being a bit behind the times, I only got to hear the 2009 track "Sweet Disposition" by The Temper Trap (after Skully posted one of their other tracks on the forum) for the first time this year. Its a highly infectious & unique track, and for me has stood the test of numerous repeated listens without losing its appeal - hence its my track of the year...

Record (LP) Of The Year... ...Chemical Brothers - Further

Of the albums that were released this year, there have been two that I've listened to over and over again, and that I still haven't grown tired of. One of those is MGMT's "Congratulations" - a record that featured none of the indie-pop style tracks that defined their previous album, and as a consequence was received with mixed feelings by both critics and fans, myself included - I vaguely remember chastising the album to a friend, describing it as a collection of b-sides. However, despite my indifference to it after the first listen, with further listening it quickly grew in stature. It features two stunning tracks and one excellent track - in reality very few new albums that I hear feature in excess of 3 great tracks. However the fact that the remaining tracks are merely good, means that the album isn't good enough to take top spot this year. That position goes to the Chemical Brothers' 2010 album, "Further", which for me features a significant eight out of nine tracks that are, for want of a more intelligent word, 'fantastic' or better than 'fantastic'. I'm sure music buffs would eagerly point out to me that each track is just a rehash of such and such track from this album or that album. But in my opinion each track (bar one) is distinctive, innovative and memorable - plus, most importantly, they sound bloody great. And as an aside, when I listen to the album while walking, I seem to walk faster to keep to the beat of the music - which I convince myself must be good for my health (please don't tell me this is bollocks - I prefer to be blissfully ignorant...)

Here are a few of of the highlights from the album...

Music Video Of The Year... ...Vitalic - Second Lives

In addition to Song and Record of the year, this year I've decided to include "Video Of The Year" - partially because despite the best efforts of Mr Gummidge and a few others to talk about music on the forum, the vast majority of music posts on this forum are visual in nature. And also because while being largely uninterested in music videos, this year I've seen one that I've liked enough to have intentionally re-watched several times. Two versions were released - a regular version and also an uncensored one. I think I prefer the non-explicit version - maybe because that was the first one I saw. If you watch and enjoy one of them, then its worth watching the other as each features a few scenes that the other doesn't

Even if you don't like the music (French techno) I'd recommend watching the video - its simple yet innovative, human, features a number of humorous & comical moments and also some embarrassing ones that some of us might be able to relate to - maybe best to keep which ones those are to ourselves though... Blush

RE: Song, Record & Music Video Of The Year : 2010
2010 for me has been about the return to greatness of the worlds greatest Rapper Eminem.I've been a huge Eminem fan since he burst onto the scene in 1999 and his new Album Recovery is one of his best to date.

Nominated for 10 Grammy Awards this year.

I hope he wins them all.

My Song of 2010 - Eminem - Not Afraid

My Album of 2010 - Eminem - Recovery

Recovery is the seventh studio album by Eminem, released June 18, 2010 by Aftermath Entertainment and Shady Records.

The album debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 chart, selling 741,000 copies in its first week in the United States. This made Eminem the first artist in Soundscan history to have four albums debut with sales of over 700,000. It became Eminem's sixth consecutive number-one album in the US and topped the chart for seven weeks. It also achieved international commercial success, charting at number one in several other countries, and produced three singles that achieved chart success, including the Billboard hit "No Love" and international hits "Not Afraid" and "Love the Way You Lie". Despite some criticism regarding its consistency, Recovery received positive reviews from most music critics. The album has sold over three million copies in the US. It received ten nominations at the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards including Album of the Year and Best Rap Album.Recovery was named as the best-selling album of 2010.

SONG OF 2010

I was tempted for a while to go with Tarja Turonen and I Feel Immortal and very nearly went for Halestorm with Familiar Taste Of Poison

- but in the end Band Of Skulls and their song Fires edged it

ALBUM OF 2010

Again strong contenders from Tarja, amd We Are TheFallen, but decided on Brighton twosome Blood Red Shoes and the album Fire Like This

VIDEO OF THE YEAR

Could have been any of the above but thought I'd go for something a bit different

Song of the Year

There were a few that could have won it, by no means all of them released this year. This was the year I discovered France Gall, so there could have a bunch of 60's Gainsbourg related stuff, I've recently begun to get very into the UK hip-hop scene after the slow, excruciating demise of the US rap and hip-hop scene so there were any number of songs I could have chosen from that end of the scale, but in the end it came down to a straight choice between two songs actually released this year. Stay too Long, by Plan B from his excellent concept album The Defamation of Strickland Banks, or the happy go lucky, French influenced electro-pop anthem Bang, Bang, Bang from Mark Ronson's album Record Collection. In the end, I chose Bang, Bang, Bang because it still makes me turn up whatever device I'm hearing it on, as well as the fact it contains a guest spot from Q-Tip, my favourite rapper, that's actually an integral part of the song, as opposed to the brief one-flow-cameo rappers usually have in songs of this nature.

Record of the Year

This is a seriously tough one. There have been a whole bunch of good albums, both new and newly discovered by me, including the above mentioned Defamation of Strickland Banks by Plan B and Record Collection by Mark Ronson and The Business intl., as well as Swanlight by Antony and The Johnsons, Only Revolutions by Biffy Clyro . Then there's stuff I've only recently discovered like Sleigh Bells, The Noisettes, Florence and The Machine and Cee Lo Green (He counts as a discovery, since I only knew from Gnarls Barkley previously). The winner is a rediscovery, though. When I was cleaning out a bin bag a few months back, I found a few cassettes, including JJ72's self titled debut album, Expecting to Fly by The Bluetones and Bernard Butler's magnificent People Move On. The winner is Bernard Butler's People move on. Twelve years after release, it's still an album of incredible scope, amazing musicianship and high quality song writing. Not even Butler's, let's be brutally honest here, mediocre vocals can detract from it. To illustrate my point, the single people are most likely to remember from it, Not Alone.

Video of the Year

I was tempted to go with so many different videos, including Sleigh Bells' Infinity Guitars for its sheer dedication to attitude and style over substance, Biffy Clyro's God & Satan, because I'm a country bloke myself but on my few visits to the Scottish Highlands I've half expected to run across scenes like that in every Glenn I entered, Wiley's Wearing my Rolex, for its excellent use of attractive young women dressed in fox costumes, Dizzee Rascal's Sirens, because I'm a bit of a class warrior at heart and everything about the video appeals to me and Muse's Uprising, because it has a giant fanged teddy bear destroying a city with lasers from its eyes. In the end though, I chose Die Antwoord's Enter the Ninja, because watching the video I can't tell if he's joking or deadly serious and a truly terrible rapper. I haven't checked out any of his other stuff, as I don't want to find out one way or the other...

Song of the Year –
Chiddy Bang – Opposite of Adults

Relatively new duo from America (although they’re more popular over here) and I think this was their first single from the album The Swelly Express. Not sure if it’s classed as a cover version of MGMT – Kids but its sooo catchy:

Record of the year –
Kanye West – My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy

Tough one to call, but I think Kanye just nicks it for me (and also seeing as groundnpound has already said Eminem – Recovery Wink). Only released last month and it’s just a great listen. Not the most popular fella, nor the greatest rapper but he really shows off his sampling and producing skills.

Some of my favourites from it:

Hell of a Life Catchy chorus sampling the melody to a Black Sabbath song :

All of the Lights Features Rihanna, Elton John, Fergie, John Legend, The-Dream, Ryan Leslie, Tony Williams, Charlie Wilson, Elly Jackson, Alicia Keys, and Kid Cudi:

Dark Fantasy

Devil in a New Dress

Video of the Year–
Kanye West – Power

Couldn't really think of a great music video from this year off the top of my head to be honest, but while banging on about Kanye West I remembered this video which is pretty unique:
