Going In Style

Lifelong buddies Willie (Morgan Freeman), Joe (Michael Caine) and Albert (Alan Arkin) decide to buck retirement and step off the straight-and-narrow when their pension funds become a corporate casualty. Desperate to pay the bills and come through for their loved ones, the three men risk it all by embarking on a daring adventure to knock off the very bank that absconded with their money.

8/10 Well worth a watch

Atomic Blonde

First of all I haven't read the novels so I have no idea if the film follows the book in any shape of form so judging it on what I saw.
Charlize Theron was great and shows how much of a talented versatile actress she is. Charlize Theron plays MI6 agent Lorraine Broughton who is sent into Berlin to recover a list of secret agents.
Now it's been compared to John Wick & to be honest it's nothing like it aside from the action which some of the people on this did work on John Wick it has more in common with Bourne & Bond. The action is brutal especially a stair case scene also the sound track fits the film perfectly. The only couple negatives are you never learn more about her character which would have been great and the same with the some of the supportive cast. Also about half way through it gets very predictable and see it all coming which lets it down, the twist ending was good tho which I won't spoil. Think of this as action Cold War thriller with a great cast and has funny scenes in it too lol

7.9/10.

Dallas Buyers Club(2013) 1985, and when confirmed homophobe Ron Woodroof is diagnosed with HIV, he starts selling cheaper alternative drugs to sufferers, rather than the approved AZT. Based on a true story, what could have been a potentially grim watch is made entertaining by the fully rounded performances from Matthew McConaughy as Woodroof and Jared Leto as a transvestite(both won Oscars), backed by strong support from Jennifer Garner(not really seen her before). The situations, characters and script feel realistic and the latter has a good dose of humour, which helps. Fine soundtrack too. Also starring Denis O'Hare,Dallas Roberts, Griffin Dunne,Kevin Rankin,Deneen Taylor and Bradford Cox. 7.5/10

The Wall(2017)

Two American snipers serving in Iraq are caught in the crosshairs of an enemy opposite number who keeps them pinned down behind a wall. Its basically Phone Booth in a desert but director Doug Liman handles the action with aplomb and constantly builds up the tension with the heard but not seen Laith Nakli as the Iraqi marksman.Aaron Taylor Johnson and pro wrestler John Cena are both convincing as the two underfire leads.Cena should just stick to films,he's a far better actor than he is a wrestler.

Quo Vadis(1951) The film recounts the reign of Roman Emperor Nero, the burning of Rome and the rise of the Christian faith. Good and not so good in this film, beautifully shot in Technicolor and lavish looking. Peter Ustinov as Nero tends to dominate any scene he's in,although Leo Genn as his advisor,Patricia Laffin as his wife and Rosalie Crutchley as his lover are good too. At 2 hours 45 minutes the film is overlong and many of the early scenes involving Robert Taylor and Deborah Kerr do drag.
However, the last 45 mins or so are pretty powerful. Also starring Abraham Sofaer and Finlay Currie good as disciples Paul and Peter respectively,Buddy Baer,Felix Aylmer,Peter Miles and Nora Swinburne. 6.5/10

Oculus(2013) Karen Gillan stars as a woman trying to prove murders involving her family(Brenton Thwaites,Katee Sackhoff and Rory Cochrane) were caused by supernatural means. A clever chiller with some spooky moments and as the film moves on, a rapid movement between time periods which sometimes means you don't know where you are, and although occasionally over puzzling, it is pretty ingenious to the end. Fine acting too, especially Gillan and her younger counterpart played by Annalise Basso. Also starring Garrett Ryan, James Lafferty and Miguel Sandoval. 7/10

The Ghoul(2017)

A psycho drama set in London written and directed by Gareth Tunley. The story follows Tom Meeten as he investigates a murder whilst not clearly revealing his intentions,is he a police officer,a maniac or both?
The atmosphere created is so off kilter it loses its way in terns of the narrative.Another effort that sacrifices story in favour of style. The excellent cast including Paul Kaye and Alice Lowe keep it watchable though with truly inspiring performances.

The Rise Of The Krays(2015) The twins' gangster career from the early 50s till the mid 60s. Radically different from both the Kemp brothers and the Tom Hardy versions, built round a striking, occasionally over strange performance from Simon Cotton as Ronnie, it employs several scenes with very little dialogue relying on the actors expressions and the visuals, indeed I'm not sure Nicola Stapleton as Violet Kray speaks at all. In between these quiet scenes there is a narration from gangster Dickie Baker (Phil Dunster) and violent moments. Kevin Leslie as Reggie Kray is rather bland. The least of the three versions, but at least not a carbon copy of either. Also starring Dan Parr,Danny Midwinter(Nipper Read),Alexa Morden,Georg Nikoloff and Nicola Taggert. 6.5/10
