Backdraft (1991)

Kurt Russell and William Baldwin are the estranged brothers who become firefighters in the same Chicago company to honour their late dad's memory. They must learn to put aside their differences in order to stop a dangerous arsonist and bring down a corrupt city politician. The story's a little thin if I'm honest with many of the characters forgettable. Fortunately, the action sequences are anything but forgettable - it becomes clear very early why the film reaped a total $152.4 million at the box office worldwide. The fire and smoke effects are excellent, if a little unrealistic, but from an action movie this is obviously what you'd expect. From a technical point of view the film delivers and is easily deserving of it's Academy Award nominations for sound, editing and visual effects. It became the highest earning movie about firefighters and even spurned a theme park attraction at Universal Studios. Despite some shortcomings, this action movie remains good fun and boasts a great soundtrack from Bruce Hornsby and Hans Zimmer. Robert De Niro, Donald Sutherland, Jennifer Jason Leigh, JT Walsh and Scott Glenn complete an impressive cast. 3/5

The Admiral:Roaring Currents (2014) The true story of the 1597 Battle Of Myeongryang, fought between the navies of Korea and Japan where the Koreans were highly outnumbered. This film shows the build up to the battle from both sides, the tactics employed and features exciting battle scenes, both ship to ship, and man to man. Although it is often brutal and gory, especially in the early part of the film, it also has a strong human element. Starring Min-sik Choi and Jin Wakizaka Yasuharu. 7/10

Colossal(2017)

Nacho Vigalondo's indie take on the giant monster genre follows Anne Hathaway's character,Gloria.A recovering alcoholic who returns to her hometown in the wake of an attack by a huge creature.Gloria soon realises she has a physic link to the beast and even ends up dictating its actions. The effects are quaint compared with the big budget monster blockbusters but the characters have much more depth rather than just being brainless fodder surplus to requirements. This is more of a human story with the giant destroyer representing Gloria's self destructive habbits and the recent fear caused by acts of terrorism in Europe. A divisive film for Kaiju fans but worth seeing for the strong acting from Anne Hathaway and Jason Sudekis as her friend.

7.5/10

Before I Go To Sleep(2014) Nicole Kidman plays a woman who wakes up every morning with no memories of her previous life. Starts off intriguing with some twists along the way,but then sort of 'flatlines' and resolves itself in a rather far fetched manner. Kidman is OK, but puts in a fairly cold, unsympathetic performance, indeed Colin Firth as her husband, Mark Strong as her doctor and Anne-Marie Duff as her friend are all better. Also starring Ben Crompton, Adam Levy & Dean-Charles Chapman. 6/10

Prometheus(2012) A team in a spacecraft travel to a distant planet, aiming to the find the creators of humankind, but encounter something sinister. The prequel of the Alien series and my second watch of this, enjoyed it a lot more this time, got my head round the storyline. The performances are pretty good, especially Michael Fassbender as a rather sarcastic, slightly sinister robot and Noomi Rapace as a scientist. The ending is satisfying and leaves me looking forward to Alien Covenant. Also starring Charlize Theron,Idris Elba,Guy Pearce ,Logan Marshall-Green,Kate Dickie & Benedict Wong. 7.5/10

Saving Mr Banks

Something to do with Walt Disney and Mary Poppins or some fucking thing, can't make head nor fucking arse of it to be honest. Also, it keeps flashing back to Colin Farrell and that bird who was in Luther as well but I missed the start so I'm fucked if I know what they have to do with anything.

10/10
