Taste Of Fear(1961)

Seth Holt directed this Les Diaboliques imitation for Hammer with great effect.Using nightmarish imagery to show the torment of a woman, who confined to a wheelchair after nearly drowning keeps seeing her deceased father. An engaging, twister chiller full of old school sudden shocks and featuring wonderful performances from Christopher Lee,Susan Strasberg,Ann Todd and Ronald Lewis.

8/10

Macbeth(2015) Against the background of civil war in Scotland Macbeth (Michael Fassbender) remains loyal to King Duncan(David Thewliss) and wins a decisive battle but with the prophecies of three witches and the urgings of his wife (Marion Cotillard) he performs bloody deeds. But once blood is on his hands, paranoia and visions take hold... I still struggle with Shakespeare's language but this version has good use of outdoor locations and colour and Fassbender captures the mental struggle and doubts the character goes through and his Scottish accent seems fine. The ever impressive Sean Harris makes a good impression as Macduff. With Paddy Considine(Banquo), Elizabeth Debicki(Lady Macduff),Jack Raynor, David Hayman & Seylan Baxter. 6.5/10

St Vincent(2014) Bill Murray stars as a misanthropic ex veteran who strikes up an unlikely friendship with a new neighbour's son(Jaeden Lieberher). In a long and illustrious career this must rank as one of Murray's best performances in a film where all the main characters are richly drawn, Lieberher is a real find, Melissa McCarthy as the neighbour and Naomi Watts as Murray's Russian girlfriend are superb too, and there's a fine supporting turn from Chris O'Dowd as the boy's religious teacher. The film covers quite a lot of ground but pretty stays clear of sentimentality all the way. Also starring Terrance Howard,Kimberley Quinn,Dario Barosso & Ray Iannicelli. 7.5/10

The Company Of Wolves(1984)

Despite director Neil Jordan's own denials and criticism,The Company Of Wolves is a landmark horrior film.Done in Alice In Wonderland style dark fantasy, its a feminist fairytale that's really an allegory for the sexual awakening of a repressed teenage girl called Rosaleen.Feeling total isolation she dreams herself into the world of Red Hiding Hood where most of the story takes place.
Weird, haunting and unique with a brilliant central performance from Sarah Patterson and strong support from veteran Angela Lansbury and Jordan regular Stephen Rea.Effects artist Christopher Tucker was responsible for the wolf transformations which easily rival those seen in An American Werewolf In London and The Howling.

The Oblong Box(1966)

Gordon Nessler's film is a very pedestrian shocker with a thick period feel.Although its all very good looking, the only memorable thing it has going for it is the impressive cast that includes Christopher Lee,Vincent Price and Rupert Davies.Who are all perfectly watchable.
