Hang 'Em High (1968)

Clint Eastwood is the wrongly accused who escapes a hanging and then becomes a US Marshall to exact revenge on his attackers. Entertaining but brutal western also starring Pat Hingle, Ed Begley and Inger Stevens. 3/5

Death Wish 8/10 - a thoughtful and intelligent vigilante thriller starring Charles Bronson, forget all the trashy sequels that followed this is an excellent movie.

Lost Souls (2000) An exorcism of a murderer has terrible, far reaching consequences. A film with initially quite a few story strands, none of them really that involving and interesting. And despite the odd disturbing moment and a pretty good cast, including Ben Chaplin, Winona Ryder & John Hurt(not on screen enough) it remains that way. There's also the occasional over the top scene, just for shock value. Also starring Sarah Wynter,Philip Baker Hall,Elias Koteas, John Diehl & Anna Berger. 4.5/10

Circus World(1964)

A Henry Hathaway film starring John Wayne as Matt McMasters, who takes his travelling wild west show across Europe with hopes of rekindling a romance with the woman he once loved.Pretty standard fare for The Duke but a good performance from Rita Hayworth makes it watchable.

6.5/10

Mary Kom(2014) Priyanka Chopra puts in a strong performance in the title role of the true story of an Indian female boxer who overcame many obstacles, such as sexism, parental objections, regional bias and returning from pregnancy to be a major name in the boxing world. Though it follows some of the story steps of many boxing movies, it has major strength in the portrayal of Kom's family life which runs through the whole of the film. The fight scenes are pretty good and there's fine performances from Darshan Kumar as Kom's husband & Sunil Thapa as her trainer. Also starring Robin Das & Shashir Sharma. 7.5/10

The Martian 8/10

I probably wasn't paying attention at the right moment - (I thought the film was a shade too long, even though it was generally a good watch) - but why on earth - sorry Mars - was there a suspiciously handy and working space vehicle sitting all by itself miles away from anywhere in a crater ?
How long had it been there ?
Why hadn't it got blown over/wrecked by the numerous dust storms whipping across the planet ?
(Not the forgotten buried one used for messaging - that sort of made sense why that was there, I mean the one towards the end).

Can you really grow potatoes in a soil layer that shallow-looking, didn't look deeper than a plant pot ?

laugh

The Mystery of the Wax Museum(1932)

Michael Curtiz directed horror regular Lionel Atwill as the crazed sculptor who is obsessed with making a frantically desperate Fay Wray one of his exhibits in this enjoyable and frightening, horror classic.

8/10

The Double (2013) Directed by the IT Crowd's Richard Ayoade, Jesse Eisenberg stars as a downtrodden office worker in a dystopian world who is alarmed to find a confident doppelganger(also Eisenberg) has joined his workplace, and becomes a rival for the affections of a co-worker played by Mia Wasikowska. The film starts well with the grim office and outside neatly portrayed with some surreal undertones. There are good performances from Eisenberg in both roles, Wasikowska and the excellent Wallace Shawn as his boss. An interesting soundtrack too, a mixture of cheese, classic and eerie. However, the film tends to drift with the introduction of the mistaken identity comedy element and never really gets it back. Also starring Tim Key(very good as a disinterested care home manager), Yasmin Paige, Noah Taylor, James Fox, Phyllis Somerville, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith & Susan Blommaert. 6/10
