Poltergeist (1982)

Completing my scary movie theme for halloween is this Tobe Hooper / Steven Spielberg production from 34 years ago. A nerve shredding tense supernatural classic that delivers shocks in just the right places. The excellent performance from then child actress, the late Heather O' Rourke, helps to generate the emotional impact of the film. You find yourself drawn to the Freeling family's plight as their world (literally) falls in on them. Always very watchable. 4/5

The Wind Of Change(1961)

Vernon Sewell's drama set against the backdrop of the Notting Hill race riots boasts a fine performance from Donald Pleasence as world weary father trying to guide his rebellious son(Johnny Briggs)away from the troubles.

Doomwatch(1972)

Peter Sasdy's film is based on the BBC television series. The population of an island become violent and hideously deformed after eating fish that have been exposed to toxic materials through chemical dumping.Featuring some good make up effects and decent acting. The film is a clear message about humanity's lack of respect and impact on nature and the environment.

Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire(2005) Harry is anonymously selected for a dangerous inter school competition. A rather rambling plot, but plenty of good moments, including a maze, Harry's dream sequences and screen time for Lord Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes). Good roles for David Tennant, Eric Sykes( a nice cameo), Robert Pattinson ,Roger Lloyd-Pack,Frances De La Tour, Clemence Poesy & Brendan Gleeson (particularly good as Prof 'Mad Eye' Moody). 7/10

Glory (1989)

Sweeping war drama about a regiment of black soldiers fighting for the Union during the American Civil War. I'd only ever seen Matthew Broderick do comedy before - this is quite a change - in his role as a Union Colonel in command of the regiment, he produces a powerful emotionally charged performance. A stellar cast which also includes Denzel Washington, Morgan Freeman and Cary Elwes backs him up. A good war film that highlights the ability to overcome prejudice and remain defiant against overwhelming odds. Good watch. 4/5

Nightfall (1957) Directed by Jacques Tournier as Aldo Ray is wrongly thought to have the loot from a bank robbery and is pursued by the robbers and a private investigator. This film is helped by fine cinematography, both in the night scenes and the snowbound rural ones. Ray is a solid, sympathetic lead but the more charismatic roles are Brian Keith and Ruby Bond as the robbers and James Gregory as the PI. Anne Bancroft as Ray's girlfriend feels a bit miscast. Also starring Jocelyn Brando. 7/10

Sergeant Rutledge (1960) 5/10
Didn't mean to watch it but got sucked in before I got a chance to switch over to the babeshows (that tells it's own story bladewave )
Standard cowboys and Indians fare from that era but with a murder mystery twist. Terrible ham acting in places but some amusing scenes in the courtroom save it from a lower score.
